  1. Oh yeah,.. the peal is yellow.
  2. I've got an original pressing (I think I bought it with my allowance!) and it is indeed fuchsia. Probably a hangover from his greeting card days.
  3. Yup! What a fuckin' amazing display by Vettel and Red Bull! Even though I've been praying for luck to look down on Alonzo on these last few races, it's a testament to the sport to see a driver/team take bad luck head on and meet the challenge! This season just seems to get better and better!
  4. That's a great story Wayne! Funny how we forget about all the resources that are right under our,.. whiskers?
  5. Yup. I was totally amazed by TRI! There was a focus on great producers at this conference. Plenty of great stories from the trenches. One example: Jack Douglas was on a panel where the producers brought samples of their work. He played several files of his work with John Lennon when he produced the Double Fantasy record. One was Lennon singing and playing guitar while he was working on "Wheels Go Round and Round". The original was recorded on cassette and sent from Bermuda to Douglas in NYC totally bare bones. The second version had Lennon "doubling" his voice by singing along with the first cassette while it was recorded on a second machine. The next two was with Lennon in the studio with various levels of overdubs and finally the release version. Really interesting to hear the evolution of such a well know song and great to hear Lennon's comments at each stage of the game. On the same panel, Michael Walden talked about his recording of Aretha and his playing with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Jeff Beck. All the cool stuff from AES is still sinking in. This is my 3rd one and while things can get mighty technical and it ain't exactly cheap, it's a real privilege for a total hack like me!
  6. Just watched CNN footage of Manhattan. Looks crazy out there! Be safe you guys!
  7. I was at the AES convention all weekend. I took a "technical tour" on Friday afternoon up to Marin (kept thinking we were goin' to Mayberry!). The tour was at Bob Weir's TRI (Tamalpais Research Institute). http://www.tristudios.com/about Aside from going there to check out the recording studios (which are awesome!) we were there to hear the Meyer Sound Constellation System. http://www.meyersound.com/products/constellation/ Amazing! IIRC, set into the ceiling were about 50 pairs of speakers with matching DPA mic's to create the reverb of any size room with continuously variable damping, width and volume controls (from a stand mounted iPad or stomp box). It could sound so subtle that, if your eyes were closed, you would swear that the room was growing smaller or larger. Bob Weir ended up being our tour guide along with his two engineers and they even provided some nice beers and tasty treats. There were 24 of us there and we were all treated like friends or family. Totally cool. Saturday and Sunday at AES was almost as cool. Learned a ton (I was in wall to wall workshops, lectures 3/4 of the time and drooled over gear the rest) and spent plenty of time pestering the software/hardware vendors I use. Met tons of cool folks and still got home to watch our Giants kick the crap out of Detroit! Woo Hoo!
  8. Happy Birthday Marc. Always enjoy your system upgrade posts. Keep the faith!
  9. Woo hoo! Let's go Giants! Here's a design I really dig (it's the splash screen of a daw I'm fooling around with). Maybe this simple look will give you some ideas?
  10. Yikes! That's some serious inventory.
  11. Glued to the set!
  12. Oops,.. missed another one. Happy B day you guys!
  13. Happy B-day Vickie! Hope you enjoy the shit out of your day!
  14. Another Giants playoff series gushing with drama! I almost had a stroke when Posey hit that stadium silencer!
  15. Let the envy begin! Had to make a choice between RMAF and AES this year (money of course). Hope you guys have a great time and get good and likkerred up!
  16. Glad you guys enjoyed the concert! I've seen Sonny several times over the last 12 years or so and he's always done that bent over, flopping his feet as he shuffles around the stage thing. It does seem like the stoop is more pronounced now though. I went to Coast Recorders (what the 1340 Mission St studio is called now). It was a live recording of Jacqui Naylor and band for an (upcoming of course) album called the "Dead Diva's Society" (or something like that). It was recorded live with an audience in one of the best sounding tracking rooms in SF. The room was designed by one of my personal hero's Bill Putnam, and except for the sound engineers and players who've recorded in that room, it is a rare treat to be inside a world class tracking room when everything is tweaked and the music is being recorded. How did it sound? Amazing! Of course, the vocals were perfect and detailed. But it was the sound of the band that was shocking. The drums could sound as small or a big as the drummer wanted and those transients! Wow! The bass line was super distinct and even though everything was fighting over the 200Hz region, the sound never got muddy (which is rare). The piano/B3 organ cut right through. I think most of us have heard one or two of these things in recordings or live concerts, but to have all of them in perfect balance. Memorable! The music? Jacqui sang some great songs made famous by gals like Sarah Vaughn and Ella. She stood about 10 feet from me and I thought that she was singing directly to me until I realized that her mom was sitting right in front of me. There goes that ego trip! I can't wait to hear the files (recorded in ProTools) and the finished cd. I'll should be able to pick out my cough!
  17. 50? Ha! Just a pup still. Happy B day Wayne!
  18. Just got back from the Monterey Jazz Festival. Tons of great music as usual and I thought I'd share some standouts; Gregory Porter, fantastic singer with a little of a Motown flavor. Pat Metheny's Unity Band hauled Pat's Orchestriion on stage. He and Chris Potter did some amazing stuff. Pat also played in a trio with Christian McBride and Jack Dejohnette. Just killer! Jack was the featured artist and played and talked several times during the 3 days. Another interesting talk was with Chris Potter talking about Coltrane on Sunday which was 'Trane's B day. New (to me at least) horn player Ambrose Akinmusire played several times with different groups and impressed the hell out of me. His band with Walter Smith lll was fantastic as well as,.. The Monterey Festival Touring band with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Benny Green, Chris Potter, Akinmusire, and Lewis Nash on drums closed the weekend.
  19. I'm with Wayne on this one. Happy Birthday Jim!
  20. I agree Shelly. Did the tweeter go out all of the sudden and/or did it squeal like a little piggy? If you're lucky it's just a bad connection. Since the speaker's pretty worthless as it is right now, you might as well have someone open her up and at least see what kind of amps are in it. If one of the amps is cooked you might be able to just have that board replaced for fairly cheap and then you could sell the pair and get the Adams that you want.
  21. Graham, Looks like a fine time you're having there. One of these days I'll get there myself but in the meantime,.. thanks for sharing!
  22. Very cool stuff! Just stumbled on this and thanks for the linky! Interesting to note, Gavin Lurssen is the one common feature of all these recordings (one of the very best mastering engineers in the world). Maybe he's one of the guys behind this idea? Super nice guy and I'll ask him next month at AES about it (he'll even talk to a hack like me!).
  23. Holy cow Al! That looks like a nice one! What kind is it?
  24. Sometimes it's worth it to replace the screen yourself and sometimes you might as well just buy a new one. Depends on the model. You should check this link out but there's a few places to buy replacement screens/assemblies. http://www.screentekinc.com/
  25. What about using the stuff you already have and just get a case for the monitor? Lots of live shows and dj's use full desktop monitors now and there's plenty of folks willing to sell cases for moving that stuff around. This link is for a 19" screen but it's just the first one I stumbled across. http://www.gatorcases.com/p/218211-899/g-monitor2-go19 If you decide to go with a hard case, Pelican can sell you a diy foam package to custom fit your screen. Nice thing about that is you have a nice case for other things too (remember the overhead dimensions rules).
