Just checked NBCS's F1 listings. Looks like we will get a delayed Practice 1 just before the "live" Practice 2. Then there's qualifying. Then a repeat of qualifying. Then 9 hours later, a repeat of Practice 2, then qualifying again, then the race. And then,.. something called "F1 Extra" which should be a post race thing. So, it looks like there's going to be plenty of chances to see most of the days and being able to watch Practice 1 will be cool!

Not too surprising! Got it today and plan to watch the DVD tonight.

On this side of the pond,.. most of the races are at crazy hours (1-5 am). I still watch them live. Even though they're sometimes shown at a normal hour, they are often edited. Call me crazy, but even when there's a rain delay or the safety car's out there for a long time, I still watch it just in case some gem of wisdom from Hobbs or Machett slips past the censors or Will gets caught trying to sit in Alonzo's red throne! I do watch the delayed practice or, if I'm really lazy, qualifying sometimes.

Good idea Mike. A couple of days should do. And if we change the subject header to the race name once we start the post mortem, those folks who haven't seen the race can avoid reading it.

The forecast is for rain on Sat and Sun. Could be a messy start for the season and heck,.. maybe Louis' big break. Of course, I'm with you guys, Alonzo needs to start racking up those podium finishes on race one.

Thought I'd start a dedicated F1 thread. Watching F1 Countdown. NBCSP's first GP programing. So far,.. Loved to see that Will is back in the pits. But, talk about a big shiny studio! (maybe too big for just 3 guys) So, it looks like the money is flowing pretty well. Looking forward to Australia coming up!

Just a heads up. NBCSP has a show called "countdown to f1" previewing the upcoming season. It's on in 20 min here in Ca on Comcast. Hmm. Probably a good idea to start an F1 thread over on sports huh?

OMG,.. how did I miss this release! Thanks Al for pointing out my shameless ignorance! Ordered! On another note,.. I was in a David Russell master class way back in another life. Super nice guy!

Cracked me up! Our local cable (comcast) is a roll of the dice. It was consistently awful a few years back when they were super busy and hired a bunch of "subs" (you could tell because the comcast logo was a magnetic stick on). The guys in the real comcast trucks were okay but the subs were rude and didn't know what the hell they were doing. Now they're just bad!

Can't wait to hear Hiromi and her trio! Here's a recording I made of them a couple of years ago. http://snd.sc/ZeM0Pl

Interesting story regarding Rutherford Chang and his collection of numbered Beatles albums. I understand that it's more of a multi media art presentation but for the casual onlooker, it's almost cult like! http://www.dustandgrooves.com/rutherford-chang-we-buy-white-albums/

Went to the annual Bay Area Headfi meet Sunday. Saw Ric (blessingX) and had a great chat with Craig from Eddie Current. His wife was there and even got to meet his daughter (her last year at Cal and a real cutie, good luck with that Craig!) Also spent a good bit of time listening to the Electra with a variety of 'stats. My favorite electrostatic amp? Yes, I think so.

Happy B day Steve! Hope you have a good one.

Happy B day Ed!

Nice one Dusty!

Can't wait to hear what John Stewart and Colbert have to say about this tonight! It's almost like something the Onion would write but once again, truth is stranger than fiction.

Wow, I've never owned either of those classics! Goes to show that there's still plenty of vinyl jewels out there. You just have to know which rocks to look under!

Any of you guys who have an interest in acoustic or early electrical recordings like I do, might find the downloads that Amoeba have made available interesting. If you don't know what I mean about acoustic recordings, they are from the era of recording when acoustic horns were used before the invention and/or the general use of microphones or electric amplifiers. The musicians had to gather around a horn and play loudly so the vibrations at the small end of the horn could "cut" the record master or wax cylinder. This made the recordings of large ensembles (such as an orchestra) difficult and in many instances, instruments were replaced by ones which were capable of producing the sound levels that were needed to be heard (such as tubas for double basses). Late in the acoustic era, RCA built domed sound stages which allowed a more conventional ensemble layouts. The development of electric microphones, amplifiers and proper lathes greatly improved the sound quality but perhaps more importantly, it reduced the need for musical compromise that was needed to adapt to acoustic recording limitations. There is a question of whether Amoeba has the "rights" to sell these recording and from what I can see, they don't. So, if you're interested, buy them now before someone takes Amoeba to task. http://www.amoeba.com/music/vinyl-vaults/#page-1 Another interesting site is Dust to Digital. If you're not familiar with the earliest sound recording, Patrick Feaster's work is worth a look. http://www.dust-digital.com/

A lot of what really works depends on the room you're setting up. Ideally, any sound system is in a dedicated room or a room where you have carte blanche to do anything you want. If you're able to, find the wall that works best (depends on shape and size of the room) to set up your speakers. For most folks, just doing that by ear is pretty painless. Bass traps in the corners will help a great deal to even out the bass. Bass tends to build up in the corners. Second, find the spot on either side of the listening area where the first reflections occur. While sitting in the ideal sweet spot, have someone slide a mirror along the wall to your right until you can see a reflection of the speaker on your left. That's the spot where you should have some wall treatment (foam etc). Repeat for the left wall. It's also a good idea to treat the wall between the speakers and the wall directly behind you but the bass traps and early reflection treatment has the most bang for the buck.
