I have a pair of isoAcoustic desktop stands. I like them because I can adjust the height by diy the uprights (copper pipe with black shrink wrap). I wouldn't swear that they do much to improve the sound of the speakers but they do seem to dampen the amount of bass that radiates from the desktop which is a good thing in my case. I think if I was using stands, I'd use the foam stand iso (I think it's from Aurelex). Now that I think about it, once you get your stands, give me a holler. I'll bring over the isoAcoustics and maybe an amp or 2 when I get the time.

Back from the Monterey Jazz Festival. It was one of the best years yet (been going since 1997). Real standouts for me: Cecile McLorin Salvant (with Aaron Diehl on piano) was the first act on the main stage. She totally blew everyone away! Don't miss her if she's in your neighborhood. Great voice and amazing musicianship! Billy Childs Laura Nyro tribute album. Just pure emotion! Probably not for everyone but it sure was for me. Jon Batiste & Stay Human performed a sort of a New Orleans styled collage Sunday afternoon that was too joyous to put into words. Put a smile on everyones faces! Brian Blade Fellowship Band. Some great conceptual stuff and there's something about the way that Blade hits the beats that really drives a piece. Need to look a little deeper into that. Blade and Eric Harland were drumming all over the place with different acts but speaking of Harland,.. Eric Harland Voyager was the last group to play in one of the smaller venues. I guess I shoulda known that I was in for something special when a bunch of the other "cutting edge" player/composers started showing up (Jason Moran was right in front of me, Gregory Clayton was standing in the wings etc.). Aside from downright scary musicianship, that band took us into unknown territory (hence the name?). It was nice to see Moran hooting as loud as I was when it all ended.

Saw the live debut of this on Saturday. Billy had Shawn Colvin, Lisa Fisher and Becca Stevens singing (Fisher is awesome BTW), Ambrose Akinmusire on horn and the Quartet San Francisco providing the strings. Save the Country brought me to tears and I coulda died happy after that performance! oops Forgot to say Steve Wilson on saxes and Brian Blades on drums.

Jaws was his best know role but I always enjoyed seeing him here and there on shows in the 60's. I really took notice of him as Dr. Loveless's henchman. When I was checking out his Wiki page, I saw that there was a time when he worked as a night school math teacher (63-65). Man, would that have been a shock or what! RIP Dick

Spent yesterday in a Laura Nyro obscession. Skipped going to the Goodwill to pick up a black dress and mommies red lipstick but her hits still have a special place in my life. That room is one of the last one's still in use that was designed by Bill Putnam (in SF). I think most everything is close miked with several room mics . I wasn't there for that recording but I was for a Jackie Naylor session for "Dead Diva's Society" which was also recorded live (kinda like they still do in Nashville sometimes). I wouldn't call it minimal miking but still pretty sparse by todays standards. IIRC, the drums were pretty much Glyn Jon's with a close mic on the rack tom. That corner is kind of the drummers spot even if it's the only thing being tracked. Very punchy sound with zero effort. The control room was gutted and re-built a couple of years ago with some of the nicest vintage/current gear you can buy (he just switched the converters from Pacific Microsonics Model 2's to Bricasti M1's and Keith Johnson is a frequent visitor to the studio). Once you can, check out the link to the equipment for mic info. There is a really strong community of studios so there is access to just about any mic you could think of given a bit of time.

Great toon! F1 is such a crazy little world. Lewis and Nico both looked so unhappy you'd never guess that they're leading the championship. And it's so great to see Riccardo and Bottas enjoying the ride to the top. I have to say that I am getting pretty tired of hearing folks "boo" drivers on the podium. I can't even imagine standing on sacred ground like Spa where so many great drivers have died for the sport and trying to make a driver feel bad or guilty no matter what transpired during the race. F1 is still a gentleman's sport to me even it that's totally unrealistic.

A news story I saw today said that about 10% of the homeowners in Napa have quake insurance. While that might seem crazy, the insurance companies were forced to offer earthquake insurance but they don't like to. So, the deductibles are more than most repairs (like a chimney going through your roof into your livingroom). Only newish houses "qualify" for insurance and after a claim is made, any current building code that hasn't been followed lowers the insurance claim. Most folks I know who went through Loma Prieta consider money better spent on upgrading to make your home able to withstand a stronger quake than on insurance.

Glad to hear that none of our buddies were hurt or suffered much damage! As far as I can tell, everyone's checked in so you all have basic utilities. I think that was one of the major bummers after the '89 quake. We were flung back to the stone age for a few weeks.

Hmm,.. Maybe I don't get it, but aren't we talking about a music server with DSD upsampling? I do think that the upsampling sounds pretty good at first blush but just like PCM upsampling, I'm not so sure I'd like it in the long run. IMHO the promise of upsampling was to smooth out the signal but it doesn't pan out in the real world. In some cases, I think it even makes the grain of the digital waveform more obvious. But that's PCM. I guess for a grand, it would be more of a convenience source? My iPad/Remote and iTunes fills that need for me. It is pretty slick and I'd like to think that for the average listener, it might raise the fidelity factor. But it's nothing new right? http://www.stereophile.com/category/media-server-reviews
