  1. RIP Yogi! There are tons of tributes across the interweb but I thought this one was excellent. http://m.mlb.com/atl/video/topic/41109544/v496973283/eight-great-moments-from-no-8-yogi-berras-career/?c_id=atl
  2. Got back from the Monterey Jazz Festival Monday night. One of the best years IMHO. Everything from cocktail jazz with Monty Alexander Trio to an avant garde commissioned piece from trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire. The festival started with that commissioned piece and while it didn't make the traditional jazz fans happy, I was like a pig in shit. A trio with Chick Corea, Brian Blades (drums) and Christian McBride (bass) totally killed. I think they're touring so don't miss em! Friday night ended with a huge tribute to Jaco Pastorious. Way too many folks to name in this jazz orchestra setting but it was great to see players from Weather Report and all the other groups that he played with including Felix Pastorious (his son) who played a pretty mean electric bass himself. Saturdays highlights included a great set by Trombone Shorty and this years Monterey Festival on Tour band (Gregory Clayton (piano), Ravi Coltrane (saxes), Nickolas Payton (trumpet), Joe Sanders (bass), Justin Brown (drums). I'd forgotten how much I love Payton's horn. The night ended with an awesome set from The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (hmm, didn't think of it till now but it was kind of a trumpet lovers wet dream,.. I didn't have a chance to hear him but Terrance Blanchard and E Connection also played) Sunday afternoon had a big Escovedo Family set. Bela Fleck and Chick Corea amazed the crowd and Chris Botti payed the bills. My favorite discovery was a kinda rockabillyish singer that has bits of Janis Joplin in her voice (nice to see her on the same stage that Janis made her name). Here's a video of Nikki Hill at a tiny blues venue.
  3. I didn't even know there were Tiers. I guess it makes sense but I don't know how Apple takes their cut from 3rd party developers on or outside of the app store (most of the software I buy is sold on the developer's sites and are licensed and sold by whatever is the wackiest and painful methods they can dredge up!). Maybe the App Store is too damned civilized for me to understand!
  4. The app's are why I've never considered the Surface. Just about all pro audio apps can be used on Apple devices but not the other way around (Logic being the most obvious). Maybe there's a cap on the price on some types software (never heard this), but it doesn't seem to apply to audio. Just off the top of my head, Steinberg's iPad DAW, Cubasis and Neyrinck's V-Control Pro (which may be the single most used pro audio ipad app) are both $49.
  5. Plenty of free 'cloning' software (I've never found significant differences between the ones I've used). If you need to go out and buy an external drive just for this purpose, if his laptop has USB3, try and find a portable drive that supports that. Way quicker and whatever makes backing up less painful makes routine backups more likely.
  6. Happy B Day Stretch!
  7. Another happy belated.
  8. RIP Moses. He dominated the basketball record books forever. I'm embarrassed to say that Mr. Becker's contribution to film was unknown to me. The two sided mask of janus was always the film equivalent to a fine leather bound volume. Whenever I saw it, I could be sure that my life would be enriched. RIP William
  9. There was a guy on Charlie Rose the other night that was discussing the new apple stuff. He was pretty full of the kool-aid so take it with a grain of salt, but he seemed to think that the new 3D Touch would develop into an important feature.
  10. Spun my red Scirocco off a cliff in '84. Went end over end once and landed on all 4 wheels on a ledge about 50 feet down. Except for that last bit, I really liked that car.

Hubert Sumlin guitar, Sunnyland Slim piano vocals, Willie Dixon bass, Clifton James drums. 1964 European American Folk Blues Festival tour. When Sumlin died in 2011 and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards paid for the funeral.
  12. I'll always remember the vacation to Jellystone with my family. I was about Esme's age. I'm sure you guys will feel the same. Waiting for lots of photos!
  13. 99% Invisible Been listening to a broad range of podcasts lately (want to do sound design for some). http://99percentinvisible.org/episode/on-location/
  14. Using the iPad as a remote for my workstation is about 1/4 of what I use it for. Luckily, there a lots of great pro audio apps that have been adapted to iOs. Here's a synth that I fool with on my iPad. Because of all the controls, it was split up into 4 views (there's also a virtual keyboard). Having to switch views can take a toll on creativity.
  15. ipad pro get's my vote! The limited real estate of the previous versions made doing real work super clunky. You needed more than one or you have to switch views to access more controls (buttons, interfaces, sliders etc). I'm not sure if they'll sell very many, but it seems like all their products with the "pro" title are a nod to the professional market.
  16. Happy B Day!

    Show Me a Hero

I've thought a lot about this show since I finished. Maybe it's because I was involved in various protest movements in the 70's or having lived in upper state NY and known guys who were pushing their way into local politics there (always wondered whey smart folks would do that to themselves). Is it me, or were things much more black and white back then? I tend to think it's part of getting older and realizing that the guys I thought were genuine "bad guys" (like the character played by Alfred Molina) are just displaying the wrong flaws and are on the other side of the debate from me. Or maybe it was the way middle class guys were raised to think that they are all destined for some sort of greatness, to somehow stand above the crowd and be recognized for their achievements. Or is it simply that we were innocent enough to believe that life was fair and having a "good heart" is enough to carry you. Sorry for the dribble but I love it when a show makes me stop and think a little.
  18. McLorin Salvant is an amazing talent! Saw her last year and she left everyone's jaws on the floor. It seemed like there was nothing beyond her skills and the range of her voice.

    Show Me a Hero

I digging this so far. Feels a little like Treme' which I loved.
  20. Shelly, that's usually a problem with your browser,.. bookmarks to be exact. Delete your Headcase bookmarks and do a search for the forum (just like it's your first time here). 9 chances out of 10, you'll be logged in. If not, log in and make a new bookmark. Should work?
  21. RIP Wes! A guide to the dark corners of human kind.
  22. Keep an eye out for Elac speakers. Don't see em on the list but they were the highlight of the Cal Audio show a few weeks ago. Sub $300 a pair never sounded so good IMHO.
  23. It's more about what you do with the device when you access the patient. You put a phone in your lab coat pocket, with a bigger device, you put it on the bed, the bedside table,.. then off to the next room where you put it on the bed, the bedside table,..
  24. Happy B Day Posty!
  25. You really are a tennis fan Doug! (I don't imagine US Open tickets are cheap) More power to you. I used to love going to matches. TV just doesn't do the sport justice IMHO.
