Happy Birthday Justin!

In honor of the passing of Bruce Hampton. ( I'd be listening to the lps if my system and media weren't packed for a move).
-
RIP Col. Bruce Hampton. In my early days I used to drop by the Twelfth Gate coffee house and groove on the antics of The Hampton Grease Band. I still have their double lp "Music to Eat". https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/02/arts/music/bruce-hampton-70-jam-scene-patriarch-dies-after-collapsing-on-stage.html

Pre-emphasized files playback on Mac
ironbut replied to Torpedo's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
I meant to respond to your post but quickly forgot. Regarding Audacity,.. Most audio editing programs these days are non-destructive, meaning you need to force the program to "overwrite" the original file. It is easy to create another file that has any processing "baked in" so you aren't forced to open the software (Audacity in this case) to listen to the corrected file. Once you have the processing (eq in this case) the way that you want it, you can "render" or "bounce" or whatever your particular software calls it. I'm not sure if I'd be that critical about the precision of the eq de-emphasis curve since most digital eq's these days are far better than the ones that were used during pre-emphasis. When I say better, I should probably say different and without knowing exactly the processing that was used and how it was applied, you'd be hard pressed to get close to a clone of the original file. I'd say that "if it sounds good, it is good" should be your final guide. Anything past that is a job for the archivists. -

Any significance to the subject (nudge-nudge)? -
HD800 Hard Case I carry my 800's to studios sometimes and I didn't want to just throw them in a backpack. I found a cheap case on eBay ($28.80) and got it the other day. It not like a flight case or anything but I think the headphones would survive anything short of someone sitting or stomping on the case. It's about as compact as possible which is a big plus too. So, if you need something like this, it's well worth the money IMHO. http://www.ebay.com/itm/261621007693?rmvSB=true Oh yeah,.. Free shipping from China to US west coast took ten days.

Pre-emphasized files playback on Mac
ironbut replied to Torpedo's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
I guess the standard is IEC 60908. It's actually pretty significant down 9.49 dB @ 20khz. I have a couple of eq plug-ins that have presets for pre and de emphasis (Ozone 5 by iZotope and Pro Q2 from FabFilter). Here's a discussion of the curve on the Audacity forum; http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9141&start=10 Using a plug-in with a DAW would be way more work than using something like SOX I'm guessing. -

Interesting. I never knew about this. But after reading your post, I did a little digging and (so far) I'm finding what you said about using SOX to de-emphasize and then convert from FLAC. Sorry to just parrot what you said in your post but I'm interested to see if there are other solutions. BTW, do you have very many FLAC files like this and where did they come from? -
Coming up May 16th,..

RIP J Demme! What a great and influential filmmaker.

I guess this program has been around a long time but tonight was my first time seeing Craft in America. If the rest are as good as the "Nature" episode, I've got a lot of inspiring shows to watch!

Heard the reel to reel tape release of those Oscar Peterson recording in a friend's mastering room. Sounds amazing!

I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for tonight's opening episode of this season's Fargo! I've loved the previous seasons. The show has attracted some great actors, Billy Bob Thornton, Marin Freeman, Colin Hanks or season 2; Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst and this season; Ewan McGregor x 2, Carrie Coon, and my current heart throb, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. I can't wait to see what the Coen's will produce.

What a great picture Greg (?). The trouble you get into without Joanne to keep an eye on you! Yahoo!

RIP Allan Holdsworth! What an amazing musical talent to have died so early.

Wow! Bahrain was another great race. Lots of action in all sections of the pack. I was glad to see Renault getting it together after so many seasons of funding woes. And it should be interesting to see the improvements to Red Bull in Espana. At least they seem to have high hopes for the package they say they'll have waiting for them there. Now, if Sauber could get a big sponsor most of the issues brought on by the Great Recession will be behind them (except for Manor of course). I was delighted to see everyone so supportive of Alonzo's decision to race in Indy. In the year that saw the death of John Surtees I think that the opening of driver opportunities like this is appropriate.

Happy Birthday Jeffy! Enjoy!

Thinking jp needs some bunny ears or some other Easter themed humiliation. Who cares how the coffee tastes. We need to be entertained.

That's some cool news about Alonzo. I'd love to see him in Le Mans too! I wish I hadn't been so wrong about Honda's F1 engine development but I can't believe that McLaren will suffer through another full season with them. Even though I love the new car width, it's going to make Monaco even harder to overtake.

Bummer. I wonder who's gonna cover the warranty on the 7 Toshiba HD drives that are currently in rotation in my system?
