Went to Davies ( probably my last time in a while) and listened to the SF Symphony with Susanna Malkki conduct the Rite of Spring yesterday. Holy god this woman can strike a dynamic reading and she's a total blast to watch too! 10th row and a tad to the right had my trouser legs flapping and my face 'a grinnin'. This was just my second time attending what is one of my top 10 orchestra pieces of all time. I'll never forget it! If you get a chance to see this gal, don't miss it! http://susannamalkki.com/

It didn't come with a clip?

Looks good. I have a couple of Rode mics and they're awesome for the money. Small mics like that punch way above their weight. Their achilles heel is usually sound pressure handling. Unless you're singing on Broadway, I think 110db should be fine (great ones can handle upwards to 140db!).

I know they make ipad mice but I've never used one. Can't see the use right off hand. With touch you don't have to move a cursor. You start off with it pretty close to where you need to be. But making selections is clumsy and not at all precise. My biggest problem with touch is it's like having to do everything with a mouse. The story goes, a recording engineer was searching for an intern to help with editing. He would audition each candidate by having them sit at Pro Tools and follow the instructions he gave. If the would be intern touched the mouse, he was out. Using a mouse is very slow and for folks who are supposed to be well trained, they should be able to explain why they use one (and not why they need one).

Like Mike, I could never replace apps like Pro Tools or do actual work on my iPad so it's a "need" thing for me. I suggest you look at the apps on the Air and see if there are any that you'd really miss. But, if there aren't any (and don't have a reasonable ios version) you'd probably be happier with the iPad Pro. The track pad seems super clunky to me vs my magic mouse or touch os.

Yup, the iMac Pro looks awesome! I wish I could say that I was smart enough not to upgrade to the "dust bin" but the timing just wasn't right and I was too damn broke to upgrade from my 6 core. I will still wait to see the 2018 Mac Pro but I was already drooling over the 5k 27"!

Six Feet Under I just finished the 2nd season and I'm loving it. There's an honesty to the characters that is sometimes a little uncomfortable to watch but IMHO, that's a lot coming from a tv show that started in 2001. I didn't have HBO during it's first run but I'm happy to watch it on Amazon Prime.

Nice article! Thanks Adam

Mmm! I loves me some chicken and dumplings! That's one of my fav recipes in Prudhomme's cookbook (creole version).

Mmm,.. I love it when these guys compete! This is the first I've heard that the desktop market hasn't withered into nothingness. I'm holding off on upgrading my 6 core Mac Pro until the 2018 models are designed and marketed so the release of these cpu's is music to my ears.

Never used Snagit but it looks like a great tool for doing lectures. If you ever need an easy to use solution for marrying audio and screencast/video, I use ScreenFlow. It is awesome. The majority of the DIY Youtube instructional videos you see are made with it.

Grew up in Atlanta listening to those guys in the park for free. RIP Greg. You've earned the rest!

Snakes always freak me out. I grew up with lots of copperheads in the weeds and moccasins in the water. That's really just an excuse for being chicken shit though. I have gotten super nice to all of gods creatures lately. It bums me out when I wash a spider down the drain warming up the water in the shower. Mosquitos on the other hand,.. I'm still as blood thirsty towards them as they are towards me! Meant to say,.. Carl I'd pay good money for a drum like that!

If you don't have to record the audio to the Surface, it would open a lot of budget alternatives (wireless mics aren't cheap since they need a mic, transmitter and reciever). If you use a smartphone, you could record the audio on it and run a mic with a short cable from your lapel to your pocket. I think Rode makes a free recording app. You could also buy a small flash recorder like the ones from Olympus. They have several models under $100 and they also sell lavalier mic that goes with them. Check Amazon for the Olympus stuff. Sound Pros is a good place for portable mics/court reporting/field recording/interviewing stuff http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category/119/mics

With a name like that, it isn't hard to imagine the TV ad for it. So, what is the worst car you've driven? (for me a VW Karmann Ghia with an Auto shift tranny).

I say, if it's safe and reliable, cut your loses. Gals her age can make some crazy car decisions based on everything but the car itself. I've had a few GF's who had insanely bad cars that they just loved. Chris, congrats! Looks like you have some talent there.

Time to put up those "Beware Of Reks" signs! Good for you Jacob but I agree, be careful.
