Is it bad that I have a chubby?

^^^ Geez ... she's been eating well. Here's some dogs eating well ... I think I've decided I like peanut butter. (Don't know how to embed this, but it's WAY worth clicking on. Semi-NSFW) http://video.google....662994518&hl=en

You, sir, are insane .... insanely cool! Great stuff!

Thanks Birger, I'll listen more.

It was a limited listen ... maybe it was my expectations? I'll do more serious listening today. What problems do you hear?

^^It is interesting, eh? Maybe the math geeks and engineers can chime in on this one, but if you look at the impulse response of the 009, just prior to the impulse there's some pre-ring. I'm wondering if there is something going on that, with very fast headphones, causes artiacts that aren't exactly representative of what's actually going on. The first spike on the HD 800 also is very fast and has significant spike and undershoot. Also, we have to remember that while the FR plots are compensated, the square waves are not, so what appears to be an error (big initial spike) may actually be desirable. Dunno. Love to hear some thoughts. One thing to note on the 007 vs 009 is that there's a significant rise in the treble at 10kHz on the 007 that's not there on the 009. Also there's more noise in the long tail of the 007 impulse response. Another thought that's come to mind is that when we're talking about splitting hairs with great cans, hte ear may be better at identifying the character of the headphone than the measurement system. Measurements slice the apple in numerous ways for a good looksee, but it's nothing like biting into it for a taste.

This thread humbles me. Great plots, Arnaud. The HD-800 looks very good, but damn, the LCD-2 looks every bit as good, from what I can tell. I did get a chance to listen to the estats yesterday. Thought the 009 was spectacularly fast and articulate without being edgy or dry. The bass was very good, not LCD-2 good, but the best I've heard on a Stax. Basically a GREAT headphone listening experience. The 007 seemed dry, thin, and grainy in comparison with the 009. Thanks so much for your help with the gear guys. Assuming y'all think the measurements are what's needed, I'm willing to receive more headphones. It needs to happen quickly, or we're going to run into RMAF. I will be doing the (hopefully) last breaking test with a Q701 and it's going to tie the chamber up for two weeks starting Oct 11. Alex has said I can hang on to his amp for that long, but I'd rather try to get through the tests quickly so that his gear is back to him sooner rather than later. After all, he's got a brand new pair of 009s to melt his mind with. Thanks guys. Please PM me before you send gear so I know it's coming.

So .... where/when will the real party be?

So does everyone think the data is good to go on the Stax? I'm a bit troubled by the bump at 60Hz .... don't think it's a measurement glitch. Anybody have any ideas what's going on there? Just measured the HD 800 again ... man, do they measure well. Here's the spreadsheet, have fun!

Frankly, I'm a n00b re:Stax. I just linked to the closest thing I could find on the Stax site. I'll be happy to change the lnk if there's a better place to go.
-
Setting them up right now for my first listen .... Also, I'm gonna remeasure the HD800 today and put the spreadsheet link here for you guys to toy with.

Hope this pleases the Stax Mafia: http://www.innerfide...ne-measurements For the geeks out there, I've made the spreadsheet available. SR-009 and SR-007

My freinds got married there this year. Saddly, I didn't go. I will go again though. Thanks for the pix, amazing.

Hi Bob, Thanks for your lengthy, and obviously well informed post. In practical terms, my goal is to provide consumers and enthusiasts with a database of objective data to compare when shopping for headphones. You can find my current measurement set here. A couple of the guys have been playing with CSD plots, and I think they are visualizations of performance that may be useful for laypeople in evaluating cans. This thread is simply us trying to figure out how to possibly include them in the work that I'm doing at InnerFidelity. I appreciate the more complex studies you highlight, but it is likely beyond my ability to pull off given I've also got review articles to write. The measurements you suggest may also be more complex than non-engineers can usefully interpret. So, to some extent, I have to look at this adventure as simply getting a good basic set of measurements for folks to compare, and leave the complexities for some time later. Still, talking about this stuff is good fun, and your post is interesting. Thanks for that, and feel free to stick around and join the fun. I'll caution you, however, that Head-Case is not your normal headphone forum. We all know each other quite well here. This place is really more a club house for a group of freinds that happen to have a common interest, than a headphone board in the normal sense. Your technical contributions are likely to be quite welcome, but it is your potential as a freind that's more important in the long run. I simply ask that you please be sensative to the fact you are entering a dialog where people know and love each other well. Thanks mate, welcome. Tyll PS Sorry about your gear, dude. That sucks.

Holy Crap! The New Stax Omega Looks fierce! (Stax SR-009)

Geez, I almost hate to ask this, but do folks feel that the Stax cans have a break-in period? And here's the pic I took today for the article introducing electrostatic measurement program. -

Well, I've got a pair of 009s here. It was sent from TMoney. Are there some different versions of these. (I'm such a Stax n00B!) The serial number of your 007 is SZ1-1023. -

Sorry I've not been following allong here. I'm in the process of setting everything up for measurements and a review of the 009s. I should be finished by Wednesday and can send the cans to Justin, if he wants. Post should be up this week! -
