  1. Thought some of the Jazz, or even simply piano, fans here might be interested in this Kevin Whitehead audio review of Ran Blakes newest: Ran Blake: Ghosts In The Piano : NPR Music . Immediately ordered.
  2. How do you know he's in Jersey? Anyway, don't miss the decade of web archives. They were sure ahead of the curve concerning the net. WFMU's Recent Archives WFMU Playlists and Archives WFMU's Special Archives
  3. Really depends on use (I actually thought the Lavry DA10 performed better in balanced Senn DAC/amp combo use - where it was hard to find a superior - than general DAC service - where it was easier), but overall I think the two 1100s have been my favorite owned DACs, with the exception of the earlier mentioned, far less practical, Apogee Duet. And even there the preference was slight and due mostly to an overall more dynamic sound, not resolution gain, signature balance, etc. Be aware though I haven't been tempted (except for a moment or two with the Northstar MK1/IIs) to cross the $1K DAC mark, so there's a boat-load of competition I haven't heard. But at the $1K and below level I think the 1100s perform admirably. My only wish would be 24/96 support, but I don't doubt for a second that's primarily psychological. If anything I'm trying to keep my excitement from sounding fanatical at this price point. This sound at $250 is kinda crazy and lately I've become fixated with bang-for-buck.

  9. I ordered around 4PM (PT) Friday and Todd said I was very likely within "week after CanJam shipping, but those ordering next week may have a couple more weeks wait." Not sure if "next week" started a few hours later or Monday, but since I'm very sure I don't qualify for celebrity status in any audio or other form, hopefully all of you who ordered before me are in that batch or at the show. He also seemed pretty adamant only 20 were making it to CJ.
  10. Hmmm same price as HF2. What to do? Kinda like their paper AK47.

  13. I should mention the film festival recently in SF had a big deal to do with my positive Twitter experience (as opposed to when I originally signed up). Could get immediate reviews and general buzz that would have been impossible on FB. We'll see with CanJam. For those who like to watch, there's always Twitterfall
  14. Except over 2% of the worlds population is on Facebook and there's a whole lot more of that over there from my experience. Like you said, I could give a shit what people had for lunch and although maybe it's my friends, a bunch of people who know each other chatting becomes just that. Lunch and dumb Star Trek movie references. And we all know which has more housewives who barely use the net talking about packing up the kids for soccer. I still think FB is a great service (and has helped me rediscover old friends), just too much like a new AOL for regular use for me. But they're changing, including looking more Twitter-like and opening up to alternative clients shortly. We'll see. The two services of course aren't the exact same experience or direct competition, but Twitter easily gives you options to follow (which works much better than "friending" though FB wins on finding) interesting people. For instance read Mark Polansky getting ready for a shuttle launch @ Mark Polansky (Astro_127) on Twitter. Anyway, I'm getting fed up with FB, so resurrecting this thread. As I don't really have enough time for both, and since some of their functionality overlaps, I'm using Tw more and FB less recently. Should humanflyz or anyone else want to post their username I'll follow. I'm blessingx, for general info, and blessingflix (just split), for film & related.

  16. I prefer the Apogee Duets more dynamic punch to the 1100 (and if brief listening is representative over the 1600 very slightly). Course inputs differ greatly. The Parasounds get much more use though. Should do a more detailed A/B comparison one of these days. Also if memory serves the Parasounds over the Lavry, but I didn't have them at the same time, so impossible to give any specifics besides a gut feeling of satisfaction (and that's heavily tainted by the 1/4 price). Overall for $250 they're killer DACs, with the caveats of large size and lack of bitrate options (which if using with something like the Airport Express isn't an issue). Like I said I bought two. I have Icarium to thank for introducing me to them.
  17. I paid $250 USD for each of the two 1100 HDs I picked up (one of Audiogon and one off eBay) in the last year. So that price is right on target (as opposed to a certain other sale going on). About the only thing I can think of testing, and yes this is obvious, is to try each of the inputs for a few songs to check for any electrical issues. Other than that if you have a preference for a rack mounted model or not, they come in both, though the dimensions don't change radically. It's a very good DAC for the price and built like a tank.
