  1. The more sample photos from X-Pro 1 I see, the more impressed I am. DigitalRev video's ISO comparison photos at the end with 5D mkii was almost shockingly in favor of X-Pro 1, smaller sensor and all. Some of the other photos floating out there show exceptionally clean and saturated photo's. Oohh, if only they came in EOS lens mount.. Sony could have had a huge head start in this premium segment, but the tsunami must have really messed things up for them. More choices the better, I suppose.
  2. Banjos playing through Tesla Coil "speakers." Got a kick out of this one..
  3. Caught a tiny critter while chasing bees. Anyone know what it is? Unknown by drjlo1, on Flickr
  4. Finally I envy that guy's job a little. I didn't realized Nikon's 85mm f/1.8 hasn't really been updated to AF-S status until now. $500 is higher than Canon's EF 85mm f/1.8 USM prices, which is the obvious target. Reminds me I need to make more use of my canon 85 f/1.8, which has been in the shadows of 85L..

  6. It's incredible to me the performance they can get these days at ISO 25600, 51200. Also on the DigitalRev video, at the end there's a bunch of iso comparison shots of 5d mkiii vs. 5d mkii, and it looks like 5d mkiii pulls slightly ahead of mkii up to about 3200, but at 6400 and especially 12800 and beyond, mkiii completely kills mkii in iso performance, no comparison. But I presume much of the difference is due to in-camera jpeg processing, and I wonder how RAW comparison would look like.. Probably not as much difference. 5D2 25600 by MrMafoo, on Flickr 5D3 25600 by MrMafoo, on Flickr
  7. And what's this: "the updated AF assist beam is compatible with Canon’s new 61-point High Density Reticular AF" (AF system for 5d mkiii). Doe that mean 580EX II will not be optimal with 5d mkiii or just bunch of marketing voodoo. ^#$#@! Just placed preorder on the body.
  8. Supposed announcement date is 3/2. Let's all keep our fingers crossed the price is not really $3500 body only..
  9. The make-or-break thing for most of us is the sensor. MP count may not have changed much, but we are all HOPING the dynamic range and ISO performance have been boosted significantly. 3 years in development since MkII, it would be almost criminal for Canon to roll out an also-ran sensor

  11. That thought has crossed my mind as well. I suspect I will have tougher time abandoning the 35L and 85L if it's either lens or the body system. Just hoping Canon 5d mkIII rises to the (high) expectations and achieve a significant improvement in dynamic range and ISO performance over mkii. Some sort of radio flash triggering system is being rumored as well for the body, concurrent to Canon's new flagship flash, which is supposed to have radio transmitters.
  12. I actually sat in a room at an audio show where they tried to demo these acoustic resonators by removing a bunch of them and later resinstalling them. It's obviously difficult to comment on effects at show conditions, but would they work for headphone systems? Do you have to wear them as earrings inside the headphone cups?
  13. http://www.headfonia.com/the-sennheiser-hd700-journal/ Sennheiser HD 800 vs HD700 by drjlo1, on Flickr Aside from any sonic competence it may or may not possess, I find it difficult to believe that any company, let alone a dominant multi-national corp like Sennheiser, is capable of coming up with such a Fugly design for a $1000 headphone. Pricing HD800 now at $1500 and HD700 at $1000 is quite ludicrous, and while I will give HD700 a listen when available, for those who wish for "HD650 musicality with a little better technicals," I still recommend a used HD600, recabled with better cable and removing the veil with "foam mod" and using the money left over for a real amp.
  14. Awesome!

  16. Using CD Rom with large buffer for spinning CD's is not exactly novel, and all these types of CDP's lack THE major advantage of music server/computers IMO, i.e. abiliby to have instant access to all of your music collection without having to find/place/spin CD's! Currently I have all my music on an external e-SATA drive->audio PC->Asynch Firewire->Firewire DAC with dedicated precision clock next to DAC chip.
  17. Thanks. And now Sigma throws their hat into the ring with their newly designed DP1 and DP "Merrill" cameras with 15MP x3 Foveon APS-C sensor, same as one found on their SD-1 $7000 camera. Anyone have experience with Sigma Foveon cameras? http://www.dpreview....Merrill_Cameras

  20. Seems like there's somewhat of a camera renaissance going on of late, with the Fuji X-Pro 1, Sony NEX-7, Nikon D800, Olympus, etc. Sure hope Canon doesn't F*** it up with whatever they will announce soon. I have a wedding to go to tomorrow in beautiful Rancho Palos Verdes by the ocean. Sure wish I had something like the X-Pro 1, but I guess I will once again be the geek family member with the large camera bag at weddings..
  21. Man, does that X-Pro 1 look great on the street. But bet it can't do this Showing how I mounted a speedlite onto tripod mount on the macro lens using a spigot adapter, as Ring flash by itself can be a little too flat and shadowless. Now I have the problem of not being able to mount the camera to tripod via the tripod mount! MP-E 65mm by drjlo1, on Flickr

  23. Sorry to hear that, but after my last fiasco with Sigma lens on Canon body, I simply will not buy another Sigma lens unless: A. I can return to seller, B. It's under Sigma warranty to fix any AF issues, or C. I can personally test the lens with my body before buying.
  24. My own photo scared me today. This one I call "There Will Be Blood." "There Will Be Blood" by drjlo1, on Flickr
