  1. I would be hesitant to give a child any camera with a retractable lens & letting them out of my sight. Dropping on the lens could be realllllly bad. Ricoh WG-4 Nikon Coolpix AW120 Canon Powershot D30 ETC Close enough to everything-proof cameras, with no external moving parts. I really like the idea of kids having cameras, they shoot some cool stuff! That being said, I'm not sue you will ever get it to fly in association with a hospital. For a very inexpensive film camera, with a VERY wide (too wide for a child - it's too easy to take a picture of your finger tips/knuckles, you have to hold the camera by its edges.) check out the "vivitar ultra wide and slim" which now goes by the name: Superheadz (it is sold under several names on amazon, but you can pretty much tell by looking at them). Roll in a day by Lord Nikon 12, on Flickr A contact sheet from my superheadz "whole lotta love" camera which is indeed this one. I take way too many pictures of people from behind. Mwahahahahhahahaha evil laugh.
  2. If you only want to go half-assed: Klipsch corner horns. If your room happens to lack the necessary corners for the K-horns you should get LaScala. If your room does not happen to be large enough for the any of the above mentioned speakers, get a larger room.
  3. You didn't know that Tnaig was making Left-hand-drive bikes? It worked so good for Harley Davidson that they thought they would give it a try. As a consumer of fine camera equipment I find great irony in photos of (stoopid expensive) camera lenses either taken with the phone, or with such thin DOF that you cant actually tell which lens it is...

  9. Today marks the first time since I was 16 that I have not worn a watch. Before that it was when I was about 8.

  12. For no reason other than to help a NYC bike messenger get a new bike: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/replace-bill-bilthy-s-stolen-bike-his-livelihood
  13. The HD800? If Sennheiser had kept up with increasing the price ~7%/year to keep up with inflation the HD800 would look like an absolute deal compared to the HD600
  14. I never *really* got the point of CO2 inflators. I guess it is about an ounce lighter than a pump, and a bit faster, but the whole "one chance to get it right" aspect freaks me out. The way the Lezyne pumps all have the flexy hose is quite cool. I get so nervous about damaging the valve with a "one piece" pump. Ooh, I'm not sure if its vaporware, and I think it is somewhat silly in any case, but this caught my attention: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1112972433/ipump-the-lightest-air-pump-ever-invented http://www.bikerumor.com/2013/12/31/kickstarter-meet-the-ipump-the-worlds-lightest-bike-pump/ I wonder how long it will take to fill even a smallish tire? I cant imagine it being easy to hold that little thing and pump. Tilt shift for product photography? Share my laughter.
  15. You agree with my assessment of Game of thrones? I thought as much.
  16. Winter is coming. Is it wrong to say that I know say k'nighit when describing the horses in chess? It was bound to happen sooner or later. I have pronunced the K in Knife since I was like 15. Because. That's why.
  17. Happy Birthday Ian!
  18. Who cares if the amp achieves a (highly) arbitrary damping factor of 8 or more. At one time the rule of thumb in your ass was 10:1. When did it change and why? The IEC standards used to say that 120ohm output impedance is right, although MFR's are free to follow or ignore that at this point. With some headphones that puts the damping factor at 2, or even less. How do you account for these? What about headphones that seem to match up with amps with greater than 220ohm output impedance, for reasons nobody understands, but are largely agreed upon? PS, you are welcome for free consulting work to improve a rough-sketch headphone/amp matching chart for your website. Which site is it?
  19. So, while attempting to auto-upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS last night my primary computer went all "go fuck yourself and die" on me. It lets me enter my password, then displays a few error messages, and then just kind of hangs up. I'm going to do a fresh install. I think this happens every time I do an automatic upgrade from one version of Ubuntu to the next. One of these times I will learn, and just do the fresh install from day 1 instead of trying the on-the-fly upgrade, but I'm a slow learner. My laptop (which has basically nothing but internet and GIMP) upgraded without a hitch. Weird. So anyways, I have all my stuff in the downloads and other folders on my primary HDD. I live-booted 14.04 off of the USB and I found it (right where I left it) but I could not get access to my 2tb disc where I keep all the files I dont like loosing when I upgrade linux and it goes all flaky on me. The drive showed up, but computer would not access it. I figured out that if i recreated my old account it would let me access the drive. My files are safe and I will resume doing the linux reinstall. Winning. It is a small victory, but I'm pretty happy about it. See you all in a few hours when its done re-reinstalling.
  20. Have you updated to firmware 4.0? It lets you pick between "super fast AF" and "more accurate AF" Superfast AF is pretty sweet in low light. If you can live with *just* a 28mm FOV... I'm 50/50 on flash with this camera. On the one hand, there are such cool things you can do with flash. On the other hand, the flash is relatively HUGE so bringing it out is a pretty deliberate thing. The optical viewfinder is pretty nice for insanely bright light, or clandestine photography, but not strictly necessary.
  21. I broke my personal record coming home from work by 5 min yesterday. I have been chipping away at it slowly... http://www.strava.com/activities/177056155 1h35m I set 2 personal best segment times and stayed on the leader-board for a Strava segment. On my Brompton. I'm not sure if my Heart rate is correct as my HRM is all screwed up. Funky firmware update, I think.
  22. Ask him if you can take it for a test ride.
  23. Is the BB reverse threaded?
  24. I would look at the scanner. When the scanner is in focus you will see see similar looking grain in similar light/dark areas (the roof of the cars, sidewalk, and the walls are all about the same lightness for example) with that film & scan res. I don't see it. Ooh, I should add, there is no practical limit to how long one should leave the film in fixer. A couple days is obviously too long, but leaving film in fixer for 30min to an hour while you are doing something else is not unreasonable. The most commonly cited "official" rule of thumb is "twice as long as it takes for the film to turn clear." Yea, 7 min is about the shortest amount of time I have ever fixed film. After fixing, rinse the film several times with clean water before you photoflo. Getting all the fixer off/out of the film is important to the long term stability of negatives. 4 total changes of water spread over 5 min is a minimum here. 5 changes in 7min would not really hurt anyone.
  25. I'm going to bet on a light-leak somewhere. Can you shoot a roll of color negative film, and get it developed at a drugstore? I think I remember you posted that this was kind of impossible where you live a long time ago - do you know anyone else in the area with a darkroom so you can use their room & tanks as a process of elimination? The shot of the path wandering into the distance looks pretty cool Once you get this dialed in its going to be awesome.
