I think Aura summed it all up pretty well so I won't go too much details. I was engrossed by the Cicadas as I knew I would be. Midrange presentation is just phenomenal and I much prefer it to my memory of Hornshoppe Horns and even Abbys. Both of those speakers, though, do a better job in the low end than the Cicadas. I wasn't entirely happy with how the Omega Deephemp worked with the Cicadas at first because the crossover was a bit difficult to adjust but once we figured that out, it was a decent fit. The upper bass from the deephemp was a bit more flabby than I was used to mostly because it is a downfiring sub on carpet instead of a hard surface. I think both these guys really benefited from this exchange quite a lot. Both of them got something that was better suited for them and I'm sure they'll happy for quite a while. I'm actually quite impressed by the performance of the Trafomatic. It was definitely a lot closer than I thought it would be. I think in the end, the Moth was punchier and more organic and the Trafomatic had much more texture. I want to say that the Trafo is actually a faster amp. And the fact that it drove the K1Ks was pretty impressive (albeit not well). We couldn't compare the Buffalo to the Parasound due to the clipping, sadly. I ran it from my SB Duet and USB immediately when I got home and it was fine so I don't know what was wrong exactly. As expected, I found the vintage RS-1 to be very aggressive compared to the HF-2. Similar to a newer RS-1 with tamed highs. All in all, it just comes down to personal preference between the 2 phones. I think for acoustic stuff, I prefer the sparkle in the high end of the RS-1s. But for anything with midbass, I tend to prefer HF-2s. But overall, it was more about the people than the gear. Aura and Sherwood are both great guys and I had a great time. Thanks to Aura and his hospitality. The food was great. And of course, thanks for Sherwood for making the 14 hour drive.

Omegas are good recommendation. Audition some ribbons speakers if you get a chance. They're not exactly my cup of tea but I agree they perform well, especially the well built ones like Usher or Selah. This would be a best bet if you were to go that route: SSR

I think all your previous gear (Grados, horns) points to the fact that you would like Proac, Splendor, Triangle, Totem, Harbeth, maybe Tannoy. For the price, I'd choose Proac. For the best, I'd choose Harbeth.

I'm sure this has been posted before but anyone care to try to explain this pic?

Speak for Yourself is definitely the easiest to get into.

First Train Home, Tidal, and Between Sheets are probably my favorites.

How are you guys liking this?

I don't think I'll be updating unless there is a large sonic difference. I have been looking forward to touchscreen since Sonos came out with it but am sorely disappointed that it is capacitive and on the unit itself. I would have snatched up a SB remote with touchscreen.

that's such a piece of art! love the knobs. congrats! -
if you plan on filesharing between computers, i'd suggest a gigabit and N router. if the laptop doesn't have wireless N, i'd suggest sticking with a G router bc they tend to be more stable. i'd definitely try to find something that will run dd-wrt or tomato. Linksys and buffalo tends to be most reliable. as a college student with reasonable technical background, you probably don't need to pay the premium for an airport.

it's a well known issue with FF. 3.5x seems better than 3.0x

Good to know. I'll have to remember that.

I seem to remember that they broke up and some of them formed EML and that EML and AVVT tubes are very similar (esp. 300b which I assume you're looking for.)

I really don't. because then i have to spend time to decode a message that's pretty much devoid of meaning.

I'm sorry to hear about that. Losing a beloved pet is tough.

Considering a Few Upgrades to the Desktop
falkon replied to Aura's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Wow you guys are channeling me, it seems. tkam is right, just get someting in the price range. I have the 520HX and I don't seem to remember if it has 2 6pin plugs because most new video cards require 2. If you are concerned with power/noise, I'd recommend the GTS 250. Granted, it's not the most powerful but it'll run oblivion fine. If you want something better, I'd try GTX 260 or 4870. One thing to watch for is Dell's terrible cases. Air flow in those tend to be terrible and may have some issues with GPU overheating. For hard drives, if for file storage, I'd HIGHLY recommend the WD GP drives as Fungi said. They are dead silent, reliable, low power, and plenty fast for file archival. If you plan to run apps off it, look somewhere else. DO NOT look to Seagate or Maxtor. Seagate fell off the boat with the .10 HDs. edit: saw that you were doing raid0. Probably means that you will be running apps/games. Ignore my WD GP advice.
