This one is pretty funny.

Hey Head-Case, what's your bandwidth like?
acidbasement replied to Knuckledragger's topic in Off Topic
Still way better than my permanent home in rural Manitoba. -
We have never had cable, and find it a lot cheaper to buy DVD sets of shows we like, though we do stay behind the times a bit with that strategy. However, a big benefit is that we have a lot more control over what and how much our kids watch. If we had the bandwidth to do computer-based TV, that might be tempting, but we live in a rather remote location with low/mid-speed wireless being the fastest option. It's frustrating enough to drive a man outside to enjoy the lack of neighbours.

Cool Article in the most recent Atlantic on "3D" audio
acidbasement replied to AmanGeorge's topic in Speakers
I can't imagine it working without extremely precise room setup and positioning of the listener. Probably wouldn't lend itself well to lounging with buddies watching a movie. For binaural recordings in a dedicated audio room, I'd think the sweet spot would be not much bigger than the size of a human head. It sure would be cool if it were more flexible though. -
Just saw the Finnish Metal Tour last night in Edmonton, featuring Ensiferum and Finntroll. Both bands brought it forth, and I'm still a wee bit transcended. Could be the lack of sleep I guess, because my kids got me up this morning at the same time they usually do.

Reks, that helicopter-zombie assembly sequence made my internet day.

I've been a few times, and it is not to be missed, especially if you can snag a Town Park camping pass. The Telluride House Band are out of this world, and those guys don't all play together anywhere else (well, maybe Merlefest too, I dunno). Can't make it this year due to little kids and a looooong drive, but I'm hoping to attend the 40th in 2013.

I love hand grinders. If you can get one of the old cast-iron ones made by Spong that you mount on the wall, without paying too much of a premium for its antiquity, go for it. My parents have had the same one in their house since before I was born, and they continue to use it daily 32 years later. Make sure it has the tray to collect the ground coffee though, as a lot of the ones for sale these days don't have them.

The new software looks mighty nice. However, I seem to be unable to get into my private messages now. Specific error message text: [#10226] You are not allowed to use the private messaging system. And I'll stop being sarcastic to new members who post silly questions. I learn and laugh a lot here, and I appreciate the work you guys do to keep the forum running. Edit: Fixed! That was quick. Thanks.

Yeah, it's not going to win any beauty pageants, but I'm pretty half-assed about aesthetics in general, so whatevs. It saved me a bit of time to do it this way, and time is my main limiting factor at the moment due to two energetic little boys in my constant care. Here's what the cables look like coming out the bottoms of the cups. The cushions cover the 'open' side of the hole I melted into the cup, so it works out pretty much the same as it would have had I drilled into the cups and soldered the cables. You can also see the big hole I plugged with blue tack on the right cup. And here's the felt plugs in the top holes. The holes were initially there to connect the left driver to the cable (since it was a single-side cable entry headphone), and I'm using them now to prevent loss of bass in the otherwise-sealed enclosure, as per Smeggy's recommendations. I have a few internal photos too, but they're on a memory card and I can't find my card reader right now. Apologies for the horrible quality of the preceding photos. Old webcam found in a dumpster - need I say more? Edit: I forgot to answer your question about the high mid-lower treble issue. It's been described better in the HF ortho thread, but the best way I can put it is that "tick" sounds come out sounding like "tock". It's weird.

Someone could compare Stax O2 MKI, MKII and HE60
acidbasement replied to mazinguerbeta's topic in Headphones
I prefer HE60 when watching football, but it really depends on the tubes and power cables. -
Done.

Hey guys, mypasswordis suggested I post about my recent very satisfying frankenortho construction, which I undertook after spending a long time thinking about it but getting distracted by having babies and subsequent maintenance activities. I posted something similar last week on the head-fi thread, in case it looks familiar to anyone. I bought a set of Yamaha HP-3 cans a couple of years ago, and I just couldn't cram enough felt into the cups to lose that funny-sounding upper midrange/low treble. I also had a pair of Vic Firth isolation headphones from a long time ago, which I intended to use while drumming but very rarely did. They sounded like garbage, and looked like this: So, I dissected the Vic Firth cans, removed the drivers, and found that the HP-3 drivers fit extremely well with the way the isolation foam inside was cut, though I had to improvise a bit due to being unable to screw the HP-3 drivers into place. To keep them from moving around, I cut and rolled up 2 strips of thick felt and put them behind the drivers against the back walls of the cups. They seem pretty secure, though I wouldn't want to yank really hard on the cables. Other stuff I did: - melted holes into the plastic cups to let the HP-3 cables pass through (soldering avoidance tactic). - put a disc of thin felt on the front side of the drivers to diminish brightness. - The original cable only entered on the right side, so the cups each have a ~1/4" diameter hole on top where the cable joining the cups used to pass through. On the advice of some post I read in the HF thread, I stuffed them with felt - not sure if that affects anything. - covered up the ~3/8" hole in the bottom of the right cup where the original cable entered with blue tack stuff. Okay, so I was expecting them to sound different from the way they sounded in the HP-3 cups, but holy shit, I was surprised at their awesomeness. They're a tad rolled off in the bass compared to my HD600s, but the treble and midrange are just lovely. I don't speak audiophile, so I'm not going to talk about liquid lush forwardness etc., but I'd say these sound a bit more like Grados than Sennheisers - take from that what you will. They give me lots of detail in the treble without fatigue-inducing sibilance, and lots of satisfaction in the mids. I like the bass fine with flat EQ, but if I can boost the bass a bit, it's really nice. Long story short, this was a terrifically easy driver transplant, and a very rewarding one too. I'll post some pics tomorrow, as I'm too sleepy at the moment. Good night.

I just picked up a NAD 7140 receiver in great shape for a song. The guy I bought it from was amazed that I wanted it, given that it's so old it has a phono input. "From the days when people listened to records?!" were his approximate words. It drives my newly-made frankenfoster orthos nicely, and gives them a needed bump in the bass compared to my other amps. With my HD600s I actually turned the bass down and treble up - probably a first for me. I'm a rock drummer and I like my bass. I am pleased with this thing so far.

Help w/ splitting headphones 16x on speaker outputs
acidbasement replied to FairTax's topic in Do It Yourself
In the spirit of being nice I suggest you read your welcome pm for clues as to why few people on this forum will want to help you, then register on head-fi.org and ask your question there. Good luck with not frying your amp and/or headphones. -

Want. I very much like the Rega digital sound, based on the Apollos I've heard.

Sure, but is that a reason to ban the original? I think the trouble I have with this is that the word is banned without respect to the context of the song's lyrics. I mean, the song ridicules people who use the word. Banning it seems to me to be a step in the direction of ignoring intolerance rather than fighting against it.
