Not sure if it's the same volcano (I expect it is), but there's a neat article about Nyiragongo, whose potentially imminent eruption threatens a million people in DRC, in the most recent National Geographic. Full of great photos. I now think volcanology is the most extreme sport in the world.

Ibasso D12 vs Pico DAC/Amp
I've been wondering that myself.

Study published in Science online shows Guinness tastes better in Ireland. This study is nothing without replication, obviously. Anyone want to write a funding proposal for further study?

Dogum gunun kutlu olsun Sherwood!
May your birthday be mighty fine, sir.

And now what did you do TODAY?
Reks, I don't know where you live, but if our paths ever cross I shall buy you a beer. I have a psychiatrist mother in law who routinely diagnoses strangers with psychoses or addictions based on a few words spoken to her. I try very hard to conceal my thoughts on the matter, and it usually works. I've spent the last two days cleaning up after my toddler, who has a nasty gut infection. It looks like his three year-old brother is starting to get it too.

Congrats on the job. Nothing wrong with waiting tables once in awhile. Turkish immersion sounds very cool. I'm surprised it's in Wisconsin - is there a big Turkish population there?

Choosing the right headphones
Nice quiz Sherwood. Maybe I'll have to try these here - what did you call them - JH13s? I got a wee little bit of fuck off, presumably because I haven't wished Duggeh a happy birthday yet. Uh, happy belated, Duggeh.

The analog thread.
Here's a breath of fresh air for those of us who've been pissed off by poor vinyl pressings recently: http://www.tomwaits.com/news/article/139/Tom_Waits_Rhino_Repress_Vinyl_Exchange/ I wrote Rhino a couple of years ago to complain about my bad pressing of Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know. They didn't respond. It's nice to see that Mr. Waits cares enough to raise a stink and make them notice.

^That is one bloody fast rooster. My brother and I used to taunt some of the meaner roosters we had growing up, and I've never seen one that could come close to outrunning a farm kid. They must be breeding them for speed these days.

nwavguy vs NuForce
I like my uDac (v1). I get better sound from my various and humble CD and vinyl systems, but on the few occasions that I need a USB Dac that doesn't sound like my butt, it suits me just fine for the price I paid.

Reminds me of this guy's work. He sells amazing and huge recycled-metal sculptures at the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market in Edmonton. Want some.- slower forum
This one is pretty funny.- Hey Head-Case, what's your bandwidth like?
Still way better than my permanent home in rural Manitoba.- Getting rid of cable TV
We have never had cable, and find it a lot cheaper to buy DVD sets of shows we like, though we do stay behind the times a bit with that strategy. However, a big benefit is that we have a lot more control over what and how much our kids watch. If we had the bandwidth to do computer-based TV, that might be tempting, but we live in a rather remote location with low/mid-speed wireless being the fastest option. It's frustrating enough to drive a man outside to enjoy the lack of neighbours.- Happy Birthday grawk!!!!

http://walyou.com/vintage-twitter-sticky-notes/ It appears to be real. I want.- Cool Article in the most recent Atlantic on "3D" audio
I can't imagine it working without extremely precise room setup and positioning of the listener. Probably wouldn't lend itself well to lounging with buddies watching a movie. For binaural recordings in a dedicated audio room, I'd think the sweet spot would be not much bigger than the size of a human head. It sure would be cool if it were more flexible though.- The Live Music Thread
Just saw the Finnish Metal Tour last night in Edmonton, featuring Ensiferum and Finntroll. Both bands brought it forth, and I'm still a wee bit transcended. Could be the lack of sleep I guess, because my kids got me up this morning at the same time they usually do.- What are you drinking now, pt 2.
