  1. Happy birthday!
  2. Happity birthday!
  3. My family and I are heading to Minneapolis-St. Paul for a concert on April 6, and staying for a few days. I don't know if any of the regulars here are from the Twin Cities, but if anyone wants to grab a beer, let me know.
  4. This thread I like. Nice gentle hazing. . (shakes head)
  5. What Steve said, although I don't go quite far enough back to remember what HF was like in the glory days. I think I floated in on one of the first of many waves that cumulatively wrecked everything, in fact. For the last year at least I've only logged in there to check the thread about Winnipeg meets. Sadly I've not been able to convince any of my locals to register here, so far at least.
  6. I have no literature to back this up, but I find that standard four-legged chairs (no wheels) are easier on my back, as they discourage my natural inclination to slouch. My undergraduate university had a computer lab with molded plywood chairs. They were only comfortable if you sat with good posture, and I found this actually made me a bit more productive, even if I couldn't wheel around the way I preferred. My current home office chair is from my dining room set. It has a plush seat and a woven (wicker, sort of) back. It's comfy and gives some support, but it doesn't lend itself to leaning way back. I wouldn't go back to a wheeled task chair. YMMV.
  7. May it be a good 'un!
  8. I'm sort of a grad student again! My supervisor found a small bit of money and told me to finish Chapter 1 by end of March, and Chapter 2 by end of May. Payment on delivery. Now my wife can look after the kids for a few months, and not have to leave them with me while she gets a job. Head-case, your collective duty is to tell me to get back to work whenever you see me posting in the daylight hours, unless it's in the "what are you drinking" thread. Glad to hear you're still employed, Pars!
  9. It worked for me.
  10. Is Oscar the macaw from your avatar? What other species do you have? Do they all get along? When we were looking at birds (it was supposed to be a way to distract the kids while we shopped in the mall - little did I know Lance's courtship display would work so well on my wife, nor that he'd be such fun when we got him home), I was quite taken with a caique, but it was way too expensive. There are a number of parrot breeders in my general area though, so when funds permit I might submit a proposal for a second bird.
  11. My cockatiel would not just sit there on a cat's tail. Nor would my cats look so upset if he did. All three of my cats want nothing more than to eat him. The next bird I get is probably going to be bigger, and better able to defend him/herself.
  12. Happy boithday!
  13. Has he ever given anything an unfavourable review?
  14. Happy birthday!
  15. Happy birthday T!
  16. Maybe it's just the hash talking, but I found this hilarious.
  17. Probably cheaper than buying all the preamps it emulates, though I'm sure it's outside my budget. Interesting.
  18. That's good news. Splitting A Storm of Swords into two seasons gives Martin another year to finish off the book series, though I still have my doubts that he'll live long enough to do so.
  19. Happy birthday!
  20. Happy birthday John!
  21. I think most of us have been in failed long-term relationships and/or marriages. It's a tough thing, and it can take awhile to put them behind you, but it's essential to do so if you intend to be available when the right one comes along. My own experience with this was pretty simple (no kids, no assets to divide - just me moving out), but it was incredibly difficult emotionally regardless. I feel for anyone going through it. The lack of medical coverage is something I can't even imagine, given the bills I would have racked up in the last two years. Just a suggestion: we have nice women AND free health care* in Canada. Have you considered a move north? *not to mention relatively high taxes - coincidence?
  22. Thanks guys. My supervisor currently has grants coming out every orifice, so as long as I can convince him that I can finish in a few months, he's probably got the dough. One of the benefits of going to a school in an oil-rich province.
  23. ^Looks like a good site; thanks!
  24. Sorry to hear that Ken. Good luck with the interview. I had a phone meeting with my MSc supervisor today. I've been pretty much dropped out of my program since, well, sometime between the birth of my second child and having an epileptic seizure, two years ago. So, I told him quite truthfully that while I'd love to finish my thesis, and that I feel guilt aplenty for not having done so yet, I simply can't work on it in a piecemeal fashion, grabbing a few hours after the kids are in bed. How would he like to give me a small research assistantship for a few months, I said, so that I can devote all my attention to it and finally finish the bloody thing without causing my family to starve? He didn't exactly say yes, but he didn't exactly say no either. I'll know in a few weeks. Fingers crossed!
