May your birthday be a good one!

Hot damn, I just saw a high-caliber shooting star blast through some high-caliber northern lights. It was astronomical (rimshot). Living under a dark sky is pretty awesome.

I notice that Larry's been offline since yesterday. Hang in there, bud.
-
How long can you stand watching it?
-
Larry, I hope you feel better soon.

I wear Blundstones for all-purpose (rural all-purpose, mind you - maybe not applicable for most people here), and Vibram Fivefingers for running. The Blundstones are very comfortable, once broken in, and they've lasted longer than any other shoe/boot I've had. A bonus I just discovered with the Fivefingers is that they give me an unprecedented level of control on the bass drum pedal, which makes sense. Dress shoes... I should probably get a decent pair someday, so I'll watch this thread.

^Nice! We owe a huge amount this year, but we were expecting it so we had a bunch of cash saved. I just tuned most of the drums in my huge 80s heavy metal Canwood kit. They sound amazing, in the same league as my DWs, but the hardware is really frustrating. There are some buzzes from the floor toms' hardware, and the rack toms don't stay in place, because the hardware isn't built heavy enough to handle their weight. I think I might drop some money and time on fixing them up. They'd be fun to perform with if I ever play on a big enough stage.

Yeah, we're getting a small bit of daytime melting here too, though it was -23 C this morning. Here are some musings from John Green:

Makes sense. I only use a French press, so didn't feel qualified to comment on the other methods. I imagine that some would do a better job of filtering out the extra fine grounds resulting from chopping, but you're right that they would not mitigate some of the other disadvantages.
-
What Dan said. I'll just add that if you're going to use a French press, you'll want a good grinder, rather than a chopper-type one, or else your brew will be muddy.

Saw Raffi last night with my wife and kids. A good time was had by all. "Singable Songs for the Very Young" has gotten more spins on my turntble than any other record, by far. Possibly more than all the rest of my collection put together.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of HDtracks or the HD800.

Noticed last night that one of the cockatiel eggs is starting to make "cheep cheep cheep" noises. It was still doing it this morning. I expect it will hatch into something really ugly pretty soon.

Good luck on the house sale. I just had my annual brain MRI to make sure the cavernoma isn't changing. Yay for pinko health care. On the way to Brandon (a one-hr drive) I picked up the local crazy hermit guy, who was hitchiking. He smells the way you'd expect him to smell with twelve indoor cats and no running water.

No, but it would certainly be visible from most of his intended subdivision.
-
I just crushed someone's dreams. Dude bought 58 acres of lakefront property with the intention of subdividing and selling cottage lots. Realized after he bought it that it was right next to a sewage lagoon, and I just had to break the bad news to him that the local municipal council would likely not grant him a variance to let him re-zone and build so close to the lagoon. He should have done his homework, but I still feel really bad for the guy.

Back in the early 2000s, she put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen, on the Deep Natural tour, and she was clearly okay with gaiety in that show and in her songwriting at the time (her song Peachfuzz is all about embracing sexual diversity). She had been born again for awhile prior to that, so I have a hard time believing that she's just drunk some religious kool-aid now. People are speculating that she's got some mental issues going on, and the ramblings on her twitter feed kind of lead me to agree with that. I hope she gets her shit sorted out.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival just became the latest of many to cancel her upcoming performance.
-
Michelle Shocked on twitter today, following her anti-gay marriage rant in a performance in San Francisco on Sunday. WTF?
-
Rocked it at the gig last night. Crazy dancers in every song, and despite jamming a lot of songs into deep left field, there were no train wrecks. That's about as good as it gets!

What in the actual fuck? Spring officially starts in four days, and we're still getting significant accumulations and zero melting. This winter sucks.
-
Cool. I love my HD600s, and I'd say that review is spot-on.

Best wishes to your sis, Ken.
