  1. In ten days I get to see Arkona (a rather obscure folk metal band from Moscow) play a headline slot in fucking Winnipeg - this is just amazing to me. Everyone who has some interest in heavy music should try to get out to one of these shows, because this band really throws down. I've seen them twice before, opening for other bands, and they are a force of nature, always completely stealing the show. File under "melodic traditional folk music underpinned by brutal screaming metal, fronted by a blonde bombshell wearing a wolf pelt". Don't miss it. 10/28: Frederick, MD @ Café 611 10/29: Brooklyn, NY @ Saint Vitus 10/30: Montreal, QC @ Foufounes Electriques 10/31: Toronto, ON @ Wreck Room 11/1: Cleveland, OH @ Peabody's 11/2: Chicago, IL @ Reggie's Rock Club 11/4: Winnipeg, MB @ Park Theater 11/5: Regina, SK @ The Exchange 11/6: Edmonton, AB @ Pawn Shop 11/8: Vancouver, BC @ Funky Winker Bean's 11/9: Seattle, WA @ Studio Seven 11/10: Portland, OR @ Hawthorne Theater 11/11: San Francisco, CA @ DNA Lounge 11/12: Los Angeles, CA @ The Vex Arts Center 11/13: Ramona, CA @ Ramona Mainstage 11/14: Tempe, AZ @ 910 Live (Outdoor Stage) 11/15: Albuquerque, NM @ Launchpad 11/16: Denver, CO @ Marquis Theater 11/17: Kansas City, MO @ The Riot Room 11/18: Oklahoma City, OK @ Conservatory 11/19: Ft Worth, TX @ Tomcats West 11/20: Austin, TX @ Dirty Dog Bar 11/21: New Orleans, LA @ The Hangar 11/22: Tampa, FL @ The Orpheum Check out the albums "Slovo" and "Goi Rode Goi". 2. May your day be filled with several of your favourite things!
  3. Yeah, I think all of our dogs have had bordetella, despite getting the vaccine. It's not very effective, unfortunately, but nor is the disease a serious one in most cases. Speedy recoveries to you all!
  4. Best wishes to your mom, Brent.
  5. Thanks again everyone! I celebrated the evening after with some good friends, playing music till 3 am or so. It was super.
  6. I wished that you have a happy birthday yesterday!
  7. Happy 60th!
  8. That's some crazy shit. A camera might have scared him even more than a 9 millimeter.
  9. Thanks all! It was a busy day of office and home/yard work, rounded out by dinner at my folks' place. Now enjoying some Ardbeg 10 by the fire with a flatulent kitten and the dog who keeps attacking him, before cleaning the kitchen. Cheers!
  10. Happy birthday Peter!
  11. Happy birthday, Carl!
  12. Nope. Dentists and optometrists can't bill the government for their services. Some legit medical things aren't covered either, like ambulance rides and certain genetic and other tests. I don't really understand why certain things aren't covered, but to say the system is universal is not completely correct.
  13. Nice cast. I seem to recall hearing (from a reputable source) that fracturing bones as a child is associated with better mental health and fewer phobias as a teenager and adult. I just got my second root canal in as many weeks. Hooray for employer-paid dental coverage!
  14. Happy birthday, Vicki!
  15. $400 and weed. I think I might get a Zoom H6.

No wait, I'm going to get something else!

  16. Seriously now, we don't really do this kind of thing here. Try head-fi.org or innerfidelity.com.
  17. Thanks guys. I don't blame anyone for having a hard time with all the jargon. Basically we had a bunch of georeferenced tissue samples from elk and white-tailed deer, genotyped them, and looked for spatial genetic structure in the respective populations. We found that the elk population was structured, and the deer population was not, indicating that deer might be a problem for spreading bovine tuberculosis over long distances. That's it, in a nutshell. Now you don't have to read it. At this point in my life, I sort of doubt if I'll finish my MSc thesis (who knew that having kids would make a guy so busy?), but it's nice to have a bit of closure in the form of a publication. Let's drink.
  18. My first peer-reviewed publication (well, I'm second author, but still...). No big deal.
  19. and... That makes me wish I'd taken up the guitar.
  20. Get better soon, both of you. I hope surgery isn't needed, CJ. Great pics, though!
  21. Awesome, puppies rawk! Enjoy him!
  22. Update: he's fitting in very well with the rest of our menagerie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iQ7HH-NR-0
  23. Last night I grilled the first T-bone off the steer we butchered last month. Possibly the best steak I've ever had.
  24. I'll try that; thanks. A beef liver is probably bigger than a couple of whole ducks. Thankfully, our butcher cut them into 1/2" slices for us.
