  1. Dusty said exactly what I was thinking: drugs yes, death no. Heal fast, Ken.
  2. Happy birthday!!
  3. Cool, thanks for the impressions.
  4. I wish it has been a happy birthday!
  5. My local library branch has a copy of the first October Daye. O happy day.
  6. Does the headband squareness affect the comfort? I've got a bit of an egg-shaped noggin. Sounds like a winner, otherwise. I'm not sure I need a decent closed can, but I kind of want one, reading about this.
  7. Eleanor (my missus) has read one or two by her as well, written under a pseudonym. She really liked them. I finished at 3am (bad epileptic!). Before I read more McGuire, I must read Maddaddam, by Atwood. I read Year of the Flood (sequel to Oryx and Crake) earlier this month, and it's shaping up to be an amazing trilogy.
  8. On Dusty's recommendation, I'll probably finish it tomorrow. I'm really liking it. It's almost too campy at times, but the profanity counters that nicely. On a side note, my wife is reading this, which alerted her to the fact that Seanan McGuire is an active writer of Buffy (and other) fan fiction. Now, even more than before she mentioned this to me, I'm basically reading this as a Buffy novel.
  9. Warm and safe is no problem, Todd - we're not going anywhere except making more frequent trips to the woodpile. Have I mentioned I like fire?
  10. We got around 6" last night, with substantial drifting from the wind. Now we're back into the deep freeze. -35C by morning. I'm going to try to say this as eloquently as possible: fuck.
  11. I had to move some reluctant cattle today - they had broken down a fence and were eating bales that are reserved for a later date. The dogs were awesome - I barely had to do anything. I don't know how my parents farmed cattle for 40 years without herding dogs. Wait, no, I do know how - lots of running and swearing.
  12. Tuckered out after hosting a bunch of friends and family for xmas dinner.
  13. Happy birthday, gennlemen!
  14. Hope everyone has a merry Christmas!
  15. Happy birthday, Ken! Glad it was a good day. Enjoy that pie.
  16. Wow, congrats on the twins - very exciting (and vicariously exhausting for me)!
  17. Have a great birthday! Welcome to the dirty thirties!
  18. See you at the beach.
  19. -20 this morning. That's more like it!
  20. Bacon tuxedo anyone?
  21. That's the big advantage, as far as I'm concerned. Low population density. -35 Celsius this morning, made worse by wind. I'll admit, we've been whining a bit lately. Fuel efficiency in the car has dropped by 25%, and the kids are driving us crazy because we can't just toss them outside for an hour to burn off steam (I suppose people in cities have a hard time doing this anyway though, regardless of weather).
  22. A friend from the Yukon once told me that windchill values were quoted by southerners (i.e. me) to make us feel tough.
  23. No personal significance to the name, aside from it being a dog associated with various bombastic events in Norse mythology. Garmr is the herald of Ragnarok (end of the world), and elsewhere he guards the gate of Hel.
  24. Fire and warm clothing are my best friends. It's actually not so bad at -40, because there is never wind at that temperature.
