  1. I have a friend who was in Australia working (on public safety among other things) for a territorial park in 2008 when bushfires were really bad. He said when the winds were up, the fires spread faster than people could drive, so basically if you could see the fire, you were toast.
  2. Your cat needs battle armour.
  3. Dusty, I'm digging Kontrust. I think I'll have to buy a CD or two. Totally hooked on this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUO9SNCBL6U
  4. I hope your special day is baconful.
  5. ^ That's on my read-it-this-winter list.
  6. Happy birthday, Frank!
  7. Fuck winter. Time for blurry ribs.
  8. Happy birthday John!
  9. Okay, this was really good. Trying to decide what to read next. I've got two Seanan McGuire books out from the library (the first October Daye and the second Incryptid), but I think I'm going to bleak it up a bit and read some Maddaddam by Margaret Atwood.
  10. After all, it would be a waste of a shovel if all you used it for was snow.
  11. Video of a lynx calling, taken by a Parks Canada employee in my neck of the woods. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlYL1F56fRg I've seen most of the coolest predators in this area (wolves, black bears, cougars, various owls), and the lynx is probably my favourite to see. They're just so damn awesome, and they don't panic and run away when they see people, so you can get a good long look at their behaviour.
  12. I've been listening to Gloryhammer a lot. Self-parodying fantasy power metal done right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTW30Q4B3Go I also recently discovered Hevisaurus, which I'll share in case you have children who are into Finnish-speaking, metal-playing dinosaurs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXhhlYdySqQ
  13. I hope it's easily fixed, Dan. Today is the last cold day, at -21 C. Tomorrow starts a week of forecast highs in the minus single digits!
  14. Well, if Guttenberg likes it... It must exist.
  15. I've used this trick, and it works. The double-membrane of bubble wrap with air in the middle provides decent insulation.
  16. The main problem with a bedroom that cold is that it's difficult to convince me to get out of the warm bed.
  17. Jacob, you might have some luck just wrapping that A/C in thick blankets on the inside, putting a garbage bag over the blankets, and wrapping the whole thing with rope. Then tape the joint between the garbage bag and the wall/window. It'll look like ass, but it should make a difference with the temperature.
  18. With two kids and eight pets, I've burned the shit of at least four species.
  19. I have no coal. Do you think tires would make a good substitute?
  20. We at Canada do humbly apologize for crapping our cold weather on our neighbours to the south. It was -38 here this morning, but the windchill value was -49 C. School buses didn't run today, so Magnus got one more day of holidays before school starts back up. This winter is pretty crazy so far, even by Manitoba standards. It was the second-coldest December since we started keeping records. We're burning a lot of wood, but the house is keeping warm.
  21. Hope it's a good 'un! Cheers!
  22. Happy birthday, Dan! Hope it's a great one.
  23. Happy birthday, and enjoy the show!
