I didn't see it, but the accounts of this and photos that were circulated were absolutely insane when it was happening. It wasn't even confined to the lakefront cottages, IIRC - there were a few destroyed that were across the street.

I just finished Rosemary and Rue, and it was really good. Feed was better though, IMO. I haven't read a page-turner like that in ages. Currently reading Bill Bryson's "In a Sunburned Country".

I agree with all that's been said so far, and will only add that you should be able to find them for a much better price, unless that 700 includes an amp.

In the next three months, my wife will be taking three trips for work (Edmonton, San Jose, and rural Maine), each at least a week in duration. I suspect that the boys will be using the Wii a fair bit in those times. Solo parenting is hard.

For a reasonably-priced peated malt from outside Islay, I enjoyed the BenRiach Curiositas, from Speyside. It's not outrageously take-my-pants-off good, but it's far better than it ought to be given its price.

The super-rich do all sorts of outlandish things. My money is on it being drunk.

My Grado experience is limited, but the HF2 is so far the only Grado I've enjoyed enough to consider owning.

The Scapa and HP distilleries are neighbours, and while I've not tasted the HP18, the 12 is quite similar to Scapa 14. Not sure if they have any bottlings currently on offer though. Last time I went shopping for some, they were too shortstaffed to keep up with demand and there was no 14 anywhere (or so went the story anyway).

Yesterday I got stuck in the driveway with one of the driving wheels hung up a couple of inches above the ground packed snow. I wedged a few pieces of lumber underneath the wheel, and was out in a jiffy. We never travel without a shovel and warm blanket in the trunk these days.

No dog, can't recall about the rock candy, but the cake was delicious.

I was in Halifax 10 years ago when a huge blizzard hit. 3.5 feet of snow in 24 hours, with 65 mph sustained winds. After it was done, the skies turned blue and sunny, and there were 8-foot snowdrifts everywhere. The whole city was shut down, except for the bars, which were absolutely hopping due to the fact that everyone who didn't work there had the day off. It was an amazing time to be a backpacking tourist. Would have been horrible if I'd had a car.

Took a long lunch break today and went to the Clanwilliam General Store with my wife and four year-old (his older brother was in school). Clanwilliam has a population of probably 75 people on a good day, but somehow the general store has managed to survive since as far back as I can remember (it was built in the 1920s). Very limited groceries, hardware, and a post office, with a 2-table (grab a seat wherever you can find one) restaurant/coffee shop in the back. Once every two weeks a barber comes over from a neighbouring town and rents a chair in a back room. My kid likes getting his hair cut there more than TV, video games, and sugar combined.

I'm hoping we'll see more portable multitrack recorders, given the popularity of the Zoom H6. The Sony looks potentially nice, but I suspect it only does one stereo track at a time - either line-in or with the built-in mics - which is great unless you're a drummer who likes recording with a separate mic on the kick in addition to an overhead pair. Subscribed.

I spent two hours chasing calves through deep snow yesterday, as they kept breaking through different parts of the fence as I fixed the parts they had broken through previously. I'm going to take a T-bone out of the freezer today, methinks.

I have a friend who was in Australia working (on public safety among other things) for a territorial park in 2008 when bushfires were really bad. He said when the winds were up, the fires spread faster than people could drive, so basically if you could see the fire, you were toast.
