  1. best wishes ..dB
  2. Thanks all, took my boards yesterday so been a few weeks of hell. Took the day off today and just kicked back with the family, discovered a small "pub" with about 20 beers on tap and an absolutely huge beer menu - couldn't have asked for a better treat ;-) ..dB
  3. More merry wishes, HB TH ..dB
  4. I am replacing a few relics - analogue tapes. I highly recommend Incholm, huge dynamic swings and great music ..dB
  5. Not a huge selection but at $3 a piece , not bad http://www.allegro-music.com/label_search.asp?label=LIN ..dB
  6. I have yet to try some of those wicking T's , could have used something this weekend as I was drenched while working outside. Two of my favourite things come to mind: my car - sounds like a prepubescent delight but it puts me in a good mood whenever i drive anywhere. If you have not been in one, i would highly recommend it. my dremel has been a phenomenal gadget with seemingly limitless uses. ..dB
  7. my condolences too, be at peace ..dB
  8. Seriously cool smegs and good luck with this. On the knife front - you thinking more along the lines of kitchen or sport. One area you might look into is making "costume" pieces like a skean dhu for the Celts in the NW. I know there was a Scottish shop in PDX and am sure there must be one near you. Custom handled carving sets for newly weds etc ( good B rate slash movies too ) - these things sell if you can get your name out there. ..dB
  9. Tyll recently measured a few of my orthos = what a guy ..dB
  10. I wonder if this has anything to do with the ribbon flapping like a nekked swt running the 100 yard sprint . well at least I am not totally insane for liking their sound, if I had looked at the graph alone I probably wouldn't have put them on my head ..dB
  11. oh frek! ..dB
  12. high praise indeed, I was / am curious to see the wharfies measure. I thought they might suck with all the internal reflections and bass that warbles, but man, I am besotted by their low level listening charm..dB
  13. I listen predominantly to closed cans and was mostly disappointed by the HPs readily available - probably why I turned to DIY in the first place ). Will seek out the Beyer's as I did like the early 90's DT's. ( can't say I have listened to many Beyers since except for the T1 when it came out.) and awesome work Tyll, I have been slowly drudging through innerfidelity and it is some of the best audiojournalism yet. ( friggin hilarious too ) ..dB
  14. It's funny that you link 41Hz, I have the amp6 with a pair of $5 yard sale speakers in the office. It sounds great which is why I never pulled the trigger on the actives..dB
  15. anyone have experience with the likes of the M-audio? I was tempted by a pair of thesefor the office , I have had no experience with active monitors in the past. I also looked into the Wharfedale Diamond series - specifically the 10.1 for the same reason you mention - small and possible wall mount. Not sure if you have heard Wharfedales before but imo they have a similar presentation to the older B&W bookshelf series..dB

    Audeze LCD-2

Tyll, totally bloody awesome is all I can say. and I suspect know where it is coming from, it was part of the design trick to squeeze more efficiency out of them. I initially had serious doubts about the working theory as the LCD1 does not do this but the bass response is partly attributed to this layout. I can't say I heard this reverb, I didn't, but when people started to speak of it, I wondered where it might be coming from other than the pschosemantocaustic (not a typo) effect..dB edit - taking the grills off will not change this
  17. wishing you the very best ..dB
  18. Your site and Walt's thread have done more to push orthos into the public eye than any other resource. I had never seen that 6 moons write up before ..dB
  19. It would have been great to see you again but i have skipped a few states over , never did get to a real Seattle meet, only one in the middle. I think DocB's would be the best place to hang out, lucky devils..dB
  20. I couldn't recall exact gain of the LF so I asked AC to confirm. The gain of this amp is set at 8.5 ..dB
  21. why not ask him - I am sure that he would be interested to hear what people want. His e-mail address is linked to his user ID on HF..dB
  22. resident church mouse indeed The gain of most of Alex's hybrid designs are set by the tube used in the gain stage. This is something that has been the subject of discussion on more than one occasion but unless you want moocho feedback it becomes a matter of dealing with a gain of about 12. I found a solution that fitted my preferences superbly but then I am the antithesis of a grado fanboy. Vintage orthos need plenty of gain and current, my needs are met. The original embedded hybrid is probably the only cavalli hybrid amp that can be tweaked to suite most needs. It has both closed and open loop feedback and the gain is set primarily by the bjt mirror, iirc it was stable down to near unity. I need to find a triode with a very low mu and play around with it, any recommendations welcomed..dB
  23. I have high expectations for the aesthetics of this amp, it has to look as good as it sounds (both factors extremely subjective, so, to me of course ) It astounds me how many manufacturing obstacles AC has met. I know producing something commercially is no small feat but I would never had anticipated just how involved it all is. I have a new level of respect for what Justin does. ..dB
  24. Liquid Gold is solid state and a different topology. As far as I know, Alex is only working on releasing LF initially. I did ask him about price point and it is mostly set. AC was not happy with the finish from one of the fab houses and is expecting things to be finalized this week. I am sure this is why he has held off making an official announcement..dB
  25. I knew Alex was getting ready to roll out his new amp and I saw a reference to the new site earlier this evening on HF. I am not going to wax lyrical about the amp as I am not trying to schill the gear for him. To say I like the amp would be an understatement but I do and have been and have been using the initial prototype for several months. Thought some of you who still listen to dynamic headphones would want to know Liquid Fire is finally getting ready to become a reality. ..dB
