Spent two hours with my arm elbow deep in a 100 year old drain clean-out trying to dislodge a clog only to discover that the drain stopper had been engaged.

I should have some actual announcements in a few weeks. I am waiting on machining and finishing.

Now that's what a turntable is supposed to look like. Purple ... sheesh.

I have not heard this, and I have no idea what Pete might have done, but the specs on those NuTubes are not promising. The good is that they run at low voltages and have a mu of 12 which is probably nice for a traditional tube to buffer hybrid amp without too much gain. The bad is that they have a plate impedance of 300K (higher than most pentodes), don't draw enough current to even really push a buffer, and draw nearly as much grid current as they do plate current. Gm is 40uS (0.00004S - compared to 0.0125S for a 6922 and 1.3S for an IRF510) and the limit to how much they can be biased means that they'll clip on a lot of modern sources. If you ran about 70 of them in parallel, you'd almost be on par with a 12AU7. I assume they are designed for overdrive and other effects pedals, and they probably work fine there.

Can be related to early stage kidney issues.

Indeed! Happy birthday to one of my favorite professors (and presidents.)

Turns out the damage was a bit more severe than a bad cable. They could still be repaired for less than the cost of a new pair, but not enough less that it seemed worth it. So new Etys are on the way. Woo Hoo?

Sunk Cost Fallacy. The thing to do at this point is to use a scope* to follow the signal path. You'll find your break that way. My suspicion would be that soldering thick wire onto the flimsy PCB pulled up a trace somewhere. * if you don't have a scope, run a 60Hz tone through it and test with a DMM on AC.

Many of them will use the local wifi for calls, so in your house may not be an issue.

I have a Google Fi phone which switches between the Tmobile, Sprint, or available wifi networks, depending upon which is the strongest. And it works for free in Europe (and the rest of the world, too). It did lose coverage in parts of the mountains in MA, but to be fair, so did my old Verizon phone. Coverage via Sprint seemed to be slightly better than Tmobile. I don't actually use much data, and you only pay for what you use, so my monthly phone bill is around $25. Unfortunately, iPhones don't work.

Brent is the one to answer this, but my understanding is that it won't work. Unlocked or not, Verizon is its own thing and non-Verizon phones won't work there. Also, Verizon is the worst. Avoid them at all costs. Brent is the one to answer this, but my understanding is that it won't work. Unlocked or not, Verizon is its own thing and non-Verizon phones won't work there. My amps are "voiced" to be neutral They work well with the HD800's because the HD800's are really good headphones which is why I usually use them for demonstration purposes. But they work well with all sorts of different headphones.

Ooo. I just talked to Etymotic, and it looks like these are repairable for about $50. Even better. After all this time, I had no idea that the cables just popped out. They won't send me a new cable, but they will attach one for me which is good enough I suppose. The reality is that I almost never listen to music on planes, the only place I use these phones, so getting the upgrades is not going to make NPR sound any better.

This is all very timely. I got on a plane last week to find that only one side of my 14 year old etys worked anymore. They still blocked the engine noise, though.
