  1. Melt butter in a cast iron dutch oven on the hot plate. Add spices and salt and let the spices sizzle. Add the dry rice and saute for a few minutes moving it continually until it smells toasty. Then add 2x the water as you added rice, or even better, use stock. Bring rice and water to a boil (it should be almost instant - otherwise your pot was not hot enough to properly toast the rice). Then move it to the slow cooking oven. It will be done in 17 minutes, but can be left for an hour or two if you like it sticky. You don't have a slow cooking oven? You should get one. It keeps the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  2. Original BBC series is on Hulu and Prime. Some plot points in the books seem to have been worked out after this was made, but it is still fun.
  3. The difference between 5H and 6H almost certainly won't be noticed. You can add a 90R resistor in series if you need to make up for the voltage drop, but again, it is difficult to imagine that making much difference. The J is probably an upgrade, so all things equal, I'd use that one.
  4. It's snowed here last fall, didn't snow all winter, and now is snowing in the spring.
  5. It's really good stuff, but it takes patience and following the directions. The internet is full of people who tried to use it like a "normal" wood finish and got terrible results. For my home from school project, I made a hammer ...
  6. Maybe this makes me not a real R.E.M. fan, but I think this is their best album. By a wide margin.
  7. Neat list. He missed the Contura. I got to play with one of these for a bit.
  8. The TV is 4:3. I think the picture is from around 2003.
  9. Power is not measured in volts.
  10. Probably. We have not found the T4 to be great with most planars.
  11. The T4 and the 3F do share similarities in the topology of the output stage, but the implementation is very different. The T4 is high voltage, low current with a step down transformer (and a DC blocking capacitor) while the 3F is high current, low voltage and is DC coupled. (The 3 - as opposed to the 3F - uses an output transformer, but no DC blocking cap.) The T4 has a single ended input with a tube LTP stage for gain and splitting. The 3F has an input transformer for gain and splitting. 3F is generally the better Focal option, but it is for balanced phones only.
  12. Happy Birthdays to Adam and Asante!
  13. Don Larsen. He was married to my wife's first cousin, once removed (meaning my wife's mother's first cousin). I only met him once, at a funeral, where he was a none too thrilled to be a local celebrity - triggered by someone somewhat inappropriately asking him to sign a baseball (which he did anyway.)
