  1. So sorry to hear, Fitz. What a beautiful cat.
  2. It is the Incra. I think it is like the old saying about democracy, that it's the worst fence available, except for all the others. It can be finicky and difficult to get calibrated, but it allows for doing things that are otherwise impossible. Traditionally, woodworkers don't really measure which makes it anathema to many people as it is purely about working to measurements. But it does suit the way I work, and I'd be lost without it. I did try to have a router table built into my saw table for a while. I tried using the same Incra fence for both, which was a bust. Then I found that the auxiliary router table fence was constantly in the way of the saw, so I removed that for the previously mentioned sliding table (which I am more ambivalent about, but when it is useful, it is very useful). The one accessory I have found that is worth its weight in gold is the JessEm stock guide. also, for the record, we have a Nespresso. I'm not that picky
  3. Don't worry, you'll have to take it apart again when you replace that fence. And again when you add the sliding table.
  4. The curl only kind of shows up in this pic, but it is the best one I have. This is not, actually, ambrosia - it is from a tree that was tapped for syrup. It leaves the same streaking, but with larger holes (which I cut off). This was wood from the $2/bf scrap heap - same wood I made the kitchen counters from.

Mine were about that old. I had to replace them a few years ago as one of the cats chewed through the cable and they weren't replaceable. Fortunately the new ones do have replaceable cables since those have been chewed through, too.
  6. So long as you do the ebonizing with tannin and iron, I'll be OK ... ... looks great, as always.
  7. For some context, the fires, just this year, and just in CA, have already burned an area larger than Connecticut.
  8. Helen Reddy. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/29/arts/music/helen-reddy-dead.html I remember my mom picking me up from Montessori school with Helen Reddy playing, loudly.
  9. Happy birthdays!

  12. I've had surprisingly good luck with spade bits in aluminum. Did you use cutting oil? Can't tell from the pics.
  13. 1983 Mazda 626, hatchback.
  14. When I was in high school, I went out on a very cold day to start my car and let it warm up while I got ready for school*. I started the car, but it was so cold that the door mechanism was frozen and the door wouldn't latch. I figured that if I locked it, it might latch upon closing. And since it was one of those locks where you had to hold the handle for it to stay locked upon closing, I didn't think it was a problem. Upon closing, it did stay closed, but it also stayed locked. Having a spare key, I went inside to finish getting ready. When I came out, I put the spare key in the door and promptly broke it off. So I was left with a locked, running car and no key (and a mother who was not going to let me stay home). I don't remember how I got to school, but I do remember that when I got home the car had run out of gas and the battery had died. * my car had a special feature that if it was really cold, the levers on the steering wheel would lose tension which turned on the wipers, turn signal, etc.

  17. All transformers hum. The less they are taxed, the less audible it is. So oversized is your best bet.
  18. One of the best professors I ever had, who went on to become president of Cornell, died from colon cancer at 52, literally weeks after being diagnosed.
  19. I don't know what you mean by ink, but I'd tend to do this sort of thing on a laser over a CNC. https://www.ponoko.com/ also, probably vellum, not velum
