I came home this morning, and wanted to thank you all for the love and support from the humans and other doggie friends, the awesome cake, and all the good vibes. I feel much better than expected; other than finding out that I have a glass jaw, I think I'll be fine. I guess I'll just have to end my career as a pugilist. Har har, snort snort. . -Ollie

Cheers, to one of the earliest and most influential people in my headphone life! Happy Birthday, Ryan!

Hooray! Ollie survived his surgery. He had a single fracture, which they re-connected with a wire. He apparently had some bone loss due to age and bad teeth, which made it very easy to break his jaw bone when he jumped off the bed. They also removed the bad tooth which was located right where he had the fracture. They are concerned if the bone is strong enough to hold the wire; only time will tell. They'll watch him overnight and hopefully home tomorrow! Thanks for the overwhelming number of posts of support here! I told Anne we had a whole bunch of people on HC rooting for Ollie, so he was sure to be ok!

Nice ride! Congrats! I love how shiney they are when they're brand new. I bet it has that new car spray smell, too!

Thanks for saying exactly what I was thinking. It was circling in my head this morning, but I couldn't sort it out just right. You said it just perfectly. -
Delivery woes drive me crazy. When I lived in a condo, they had a management office, which really helped. Now that I'm in a house, no one is ever around when they deliver. They often just leave it on the porch, which has been fine, but I worry about theft. Now I send my important stuff to work, where I have lots of trusted work neighbors who will accept for me, but I'm not at that office every day. Good luck, man - hope you get your package soon!

Wow, great news, Jim! Tenure is just huge. Drinks all around! Bryan, congrats on finishing your report!

Whew! That looks gorgeous. Congrats!

Thanks for all your support! Vet says he's 95% sure Ollie's jaw is broken in one, maybe two places. He'll need surgery of some sort, depending on how bad it is. He's taking him overnight to workup his general health and ability to tolerate the surgery. Then best case scenario, which he thinks is the case, is a break in one or two places and he'll wire the bones back together tomorrow, monitor overnight, and home on Wed. Worst case scenario is the mandible is shattered, which he doubts, but then there's nothing to reconnect, and it's either a specialist for $10k or remove the mandible and have an even funnier looking dog. Poor Ollie. Shouldn't have let him up on the bed, I guess. Hindsight is 20/20.

Yesterday morning at the in-laws, our almost blind pug jumped off the bed we slept on, which was higher than he thought, and he landed awkwardly on his face. He cut his lower lip, bled everywhere, and hasn't been the same since; he hardly eats (very unusual for him), and hardly drinks. His normally sad looking face even when he's not sad is REALLY sad now. We figured it was just the pain from the cut on his lip, but when the vet called us back this AM, he said yes it might be that, but it's not unusual to break a jaw that way, too. He suggested moving the lower jaw a bit to see if it's really floppy. When we tried to do this, he screamed bloody murder and freaked out. The vet is coming this afternoon (yes, our vet makes house calls!). Hope it's nothing too serious. That's Ollie on the left. His sister Ginger is on the right.

Wow, Carl, just awful. It's always amazed me what journalists do. Jumping right into the thick of the most dangerous areas.

Good luck, CJ! Lost me a bit, though. Are you trying to go back to med school? In my experience, doctors are plenty smart, but not thaaat smart. Certainly no smarter than most anyone hanging around here. Mostly doctors have great memorizing ability, and work work work work , tolerate great pain, work, more work, and convince themselves that it's pretty great working a lot. But there's new rules protecring residents from overworking, so maybe not as bad anymore? Not aure. Anyways, you're certainly more likely to succeed in something you really like for yourself than anything you do for someone else! Edit: although I guess I worry a bit about why you left after 8 days the first time through, and what's changed since then ...

Going here http://www.palmerssteakhouse.com/ tonight for my brother in law's bday. Exciting, I haven't been to good steakhouse in a while!

Damn VA firewall blocked me from looking this up. Can you believe they don't consider this a part of my work here?

Got it, thanks Peter and Al! Peter, did you ever get around to trying the Dragon's Milk? I seem to remember you being interested a few months back.

I hope he didn't break his stapes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stapes

Are Russian Imperial Stouts coffee based? I didn't think so, but I could easily be wrong. No time to look it up now.

Actually, that does help a bit, Mike.

I will do you the favor of taking the dented iPad 2 off your hands at a great discount.

It's next weekend. I know this because it was on my calendar for over a year. A few months before tickets went on sale, my wife says, 'guess what, honey! You know that project I was working on? It was accepted by the Family Practice Society of Educators something something blah blah! I'm going to New Orleans the last weekend in April to present it at their annual meeting, and probably take a few days to visit New Orleans! Hope you dont mind having the kids for the long weekend.' Oh ... that's great, honey! Congratulations! Grumble grumble. Actually, it's a big deal for her, and I am proud of her. Really. I just can't believe it's the same weekend as Dark Lord Day. One of those mixed, ambivalent 'I'm happy for you' moments.

I get the appeal of consolidating. We've chosen to travel with no laptop, but bring the iPad, a case of DVDs and CDs, a portable DVD player, MP3 player, GPS, books, magazines, a bunch of kids toys, then wonder why it's such a tight fit in the Prius.

Good to know. 30th is approaching. Haven't gone to any, not much desire, but a part of me kinda wonders. Maybe we've all grown up, and now everyone will be so much more interesting and nice. Then I think, eh, probably not.

When's the pizza party?

Dammit, Al. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you find some good news eventually. Sometimes doors open, but not until others are fully closed. I hope that turns out to be the case for you two.
