  1. I tried to install Jaadu on my desktop computer in preparation for using the iPad as a VNC. Unfortunately, my ATT 2Wire router does not support autoconfiguration, and when I tried to configure it manually, it was a headache. I looked around for other options, and found this: www.teamviewer.com There is now an iPhone/iTouch app: www.teamviewer.com/iphone This is a free (if used for personal use, not business) remote access program. I tried it out on my various computers, and it seems to work great, and is very easy to install and use. I'm not technical enough to know the advantage of a true VNC over this, or to understand the details about security. But the web site states it is encrypted and uses the same standard as SSL. I hope to use this for remote access of all my computers via the iPad. Perhaps this would work for you, as well? On another topic, what do experienced Apple people think about the Apple Care program for $99? I don't usually go for extended warranties, but am willing to pay a bit for technical support, especially on a new and unfamiliar gadget, and for reduced down time in the event of a problem/repair.
  2. Ordered mine too. 32GB,3G. I don't hate myself, but I hate that I have to wait a month longer than you non-3G-ers!

Thanks! Look forward to hearing more!
  4. Portable BT keyboard, coming spring of 2010. For iPad, AND iPhone/iTouch. I know, I know, I'll believe it when I see it. But we know an external keyboard will be allowed for iPad; I wonder if this would automatically allow external keyboards for iTouch and iPhone, since they are essentially the same OS? Perhaps Apple was delaying allowing this until iPad gets a foothold? I know that in the past, I would have been happy w/ an iTouch, if only it had an external keyboard. But now that I've been thinking of the ways I could use the iPad (esp as a VNC), I'll get an iPad over the iTouch. (Currently I have none of the above - only my Palm TX, which is on its last leg!) 5. Sorry if this has already been posted. Great book about how we hear and experience music, and how and why it affects us. The author is a former musician and recording engineer who went back to school to get his PhD in Psychology, and now runs a lab at McGill on Musical Perception, Cognition and Expertise. A fascinating read for any audiophile!
  6. I'll be getting the 3G.
  7. Looks very, very cool. Need to know what else it does, besides looking cool.

I can donate a 15 year old Audio Technica MM cartridge. I'd have to look up the model number. Might be a piece of crap though. Cost about $100 at the time, I think. I can also donate a Discwasher record cleaner and stylus cleaner. Never did buy a Zerostat, though.

My Funk vinyl weeps for a good home. Uncle Jam Wants You, swt! Roger Troutman is calling you out with his funked up computer voice. Bootsy Collins needs a place to lay down his groove!

Awright, swt! You comin' to CJ? I'll put some old vinyl aside for you! The price is right!

Ok, I have a confession to make. I got totally Sluffed last night, I'm not sure I even had a Crunk stage in my life, and I had to look up 'crunk' in the urban dictionary. BUT, I'm pretty sure I have some George Clinton on vinyl to give away! Anyone else on the P-Funk Mothership before they got old and sluffed? No George Clinton, no modern rap!
  13. Can the server be mobile, as long as it is in range of a network? Can I bring my laptop, which will function as the server, to either my home (wifi) or office (ethernet), and can I still access it by using the client iPad/iTouch/iPhone? And also have access to multiple servers?
  14. Ooooh, Apple makes iUnderpants?! Does it have multitouch and accelerometer built in? Imagine the possibilities!!! What happens if you spread your fingers on it? If you did jumping jacks or cartwheels? Clearly this is the next must have accessory!
  15. Can't you use the MBP as a server not just for your music, but for all your software, with the iPad used as a VNC? That's what I hope to do with my laptop PC, using Morphsci's recommended Jaadu. But this is all new to me, so maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks, Duggeh! Sorry, but I don't think prog-rock even existed when I was buying vinyl. But a fair amount of classic rock, and it would be great to meet you! Stop and say hi!

Thanks, Voltron! I'll bring the vinyl for the give away.
  20. Yeah! For the Trash 80! Programmed on that thing in high school! And saved my precious work on cassette tapes. Maxell gold, I believe. Although I think I did buy a Maxwell once ... d'oh!
  21. X3 on Grawk's client/server concept. I really look forward to not carrying around my laptop all day everywhere I go, because I will access it via the iPad. I will access pretty sophisticated software in the clouds via its web access , where I will eventually have access to all my patient records at any time, in any place. The electronic health records company I am considering said they are watching the Apple/Flash issue, because they do use Flash for their interface; but they already said if those companies can't work out their differences, then they will just write an iPad program. It will be my primary organizational device (calendar, contacts, notes), which will sync to my main office's computer so that others can access that information while I'm out. TV, games, music, that's all icing to me. Nice icing, no doubt, but icing nonetheless.
  22. I couldn't agree with you more, Monkey! As a student or young single guy, it was fun to toy around with settings and customizing to the nth degree, and having it do anything and everything. But as a middle aged guy w/ a wife, two young kids, and a busy job, I want it to do what it does really well, without a fuss, and definitely without having to read an owner's manual. In fact, if I ever have to read any directions to use a gadget any more, it infuriates me! I think most people feel this way, other than maybe the 2 percent on the right side of the curve. And those people will find a way to change things the way they want, anyway! The only criticism I'd give to Apple on this is that they could affort to fight those 2 percenters a bit less, as long as it doesn't infringe on copyrights and such.

I would love to be mobbed for my vinyl. And it is definitely free - any donation is voluntary. I just want to be sure it's worth the effort to pack it up and carry it. You're the first to even nibble! Thanks for the interest- anyone else think the vinyl would go? In terms of stores, I think Music Direct sells vinyl. More of a catalogue store, hard to find, in a warehouse somewhere downtown. I got totally lost the one time I went. But they seem to have every CD and SACD ever made! Might be worth a stop! But be careful, I went just to browse some equipment, and walked out with about 8 discs and a weeping credit card!

Hey asr! Will be good to see you again! First off, the public transportation system is excellent. You can take the bus or train (called the ‘el’ as in ‘el-evated’ train) anywhere around the city. Buy a daily card for a few dollars, and the city is yours. Fares: http://www.transitchicago.com/travel_information/fares/default.aspx Maps: 1-888-YOURCTA | System Map - Downtown Google maps has CTA on its maps by clicking on ‘More – Transit’ Quick and dirty food, huh? Portable: Al’s beef is well known and popular, just west of the loop. Haven’t been, but the beef experts I know say it’s one of the best for Italian Beef sandwiches. Al's Beef - Chicago's #1 Italian Beef Franchise Wowbao is a take out bao (steamed buns) place. There is one right at the entrance of Water Tower Place, which you will need to visit, anyway. Water Tower is a giant indoor mall on the north end of the Gold Coast. Take the bus up Michigan Avenue to Water Tower. Pick up some baos, walk around the mall, then take a walk south on Michigan Avenue to see some world class shopping and people watching. Wow Bao - home See ‘Greek’ below. Oh, and while you’re walking down Michigan Ave., be sure to stop and pick up a bag of popcorn at http://www.garrettpopcorn.com/ Looks like there’s also one in the loop, but better to stop in while you’re taking your walk. Sit down: Bigbowl is an inexpensive but nice sit down place for Pan-Asian noodles BigBowl Sixtyfive is a decent dive of a Chinese place. Nothing special, but not bad for its price and location. http://www.65restaurant.com/sixtyfive/default.asp You mentioned Greek – you are not too far from Greek Town when you’re in the loop. It’s probably worth a brief side trip, or maybe a quick lunch or dinner. These are my two favorites: Welcome to the G R E E K I S L A N D S http://www.roditys.com/ There are also plenty of little gyro take out places if you’d prefer. Pizza: Sorry, but pizza is a bit of a religion around here. You will have to sit down and sample at least one of these joints. And go before 530pm to avoid an hour wait. Uno’s and Due are sister restaurants. Great pan/deep dish. Pretty well known. Uno Chicago Grill - Original Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, Flatbreads, Pasta, Steaks, Seafood, Burgers, Sandwiches, Salads, Soups Gino’s East – another well known and legendary pan/deep dish place. Maybe it’s just personal taste, but I tend to go to the other places these days, they don’t seem as good as they used to be. But I have friends who still love it. http://www.ginoseast.com/ Can’t get this link to work – call them if this doesn’t work: 633 North Wells Street, Chicago, IL 60654-3792(312) 943-1124‎ Edwardo’s. Very nice stuffed pizza, which is a two inch thick monster filled with a brick of mozzarella and ingredients. Yum. www.edwardos.com Can’t get this link to work right now. I hope it’s still open. 521 South Dearborn Street, Chicago - (312) 939-3366 Less well known, but has to be mentioned as one of the major Chicago pizza joints. Good pan pizza, crust is corn meal based, which I don’t care for, but some do. Lou Malnati's Pizzeria - Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza There’s tons of little pizza places for a quick slice, if you must. But don’t tell me you did this, you’ll hurt my feelings! It’d be like you bringing your Blue Hawaii and Omegas and I said, ‘meh, I’ll just have a listen to these Bose Quiet Comforts over here, it’s easier … ;-) Be sure to visit Navy Pier for a walk, maybe take in an Imax film, take a ride on the Seadog boat tour – an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River through the city and ending with a full speed sprint up and down the coast. Chinatown isn’t too far, but definitely out of your way. Lots of museums – the Aquarium has a pretty cool new dolphin show, Museum of Science and Industry. Millenium Park is a great walk in the spring/summer. Welcome to Explore Chicago | The City of Chicago's Official Tourism Site The Grant Park Orchestra has free outdoor classical concerts and they’re not bad at all. Pack a picnic and sit outside for some free music. Classical Concerts in Millennium Park | The Grant Park Music Festival Of course, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is world class, but pricey, and in a bit of a transition. Barenboim was a hot head and didn’t do much during his tenure, IMHO, and Muti hasn’t really put his stamp on them yet. But it’s still the CSO, and they’re still very good. Chicago Symphony Orchestra I’m sure I’ve missed some ideas, there’s just so much. Have a great visit, and hope to see you at CJ!

Yup, been to Moto. Fun, high tech food. I think the chef there was on Iron Chef and won. We had something flash frozen in liquid nitrogen, fish cooked in a self contained portable oven at the table, forks shaped like corkscrews so it could wind around herbs, so you can sniff the herbs as you brought the ffod to your mouth. The finale was a covered dish which upon opening was a cell phone ringing, and when we answered, it was the chef inviting us back to tour the kitchen. All very gimmicky, but it was all fun, plus the food was actually really good!
