  1. That's screamin' deal. We've had a bunch of MacBookPro motherboards die just beyond our warranty period and they haven't offered anything like that.
  2. I got mine at Headphone Solutions for about $140 ~ $150, but I see they've gone up. Drat.
  3. Holy smokes! Major congratulations Jacob!!!! <Edit> The save bug is good for something. Double congratulations!
  4. Holy smokes! Major congratulations Jacob!!!!
  5. LOL Enigma, who is mostly white and has the best developed shedding skills of any animal alive, loves to make a nest in laundry. Not dirty laundry, only clean laundry. With a strong preference for dark colors. We buy those adhesive lint rollers in sixpacks. Some might wonder how it is that she is able to gain access to clean, dark laundry. It's complicated. Laundry customs are a subtle and nuanced thing. Larry - I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It sounds like the circumstances made an already horrible event darn near unbearable. My father in law had a stroke that basically ruined the last couple years of his life in similar circumstances. He was stricken for a good two days before his friends realized something was wrong and called 911 over his objections. Such a waste. In just about every town, there is some sort of genealogy club whose members know all the tricks. Find those people and they should be able to set you straight.
  6. That is, in fact, more elegant. Much.
  7. Dupe post. "Saving post" bug, I think.
  8. I, on the other hand, updated my wardrobe at the local thrift store.
  9. Opera runs the board quicker but Safari's spellcheck still works. What's the "Like This" button supposed to do, exactly?
  10. I've used one of these before every spin for years: And with proper credit to JP for discovering the thing, this gizmo from Music Direct works wonders if you don't happen to want to go to the trouble of doing a machine cleaning. It has quieted some pretty noisy records for me. (This is the $19 In the Groove gizmo with the gooey roller, not the $40 one that has tear-off sheets like a lint roller.)
  11. If anybody has a more elegant answer than "just mashes on from the back" I haven't heard it yet. That's what I did.
  12. Faster= good. I like the view content options. For some reason, Opera's spell check doesn't want to work anymore?
  13. Happy Birthday Antonio! How does Al find all those cool pictures for birthday cards?
  14. Sounds like it's under control. Fore- armed is forewarned or whatever.
  15. Which brings up the whole matter of women and laundry. Domestic friction can result. Caution should be applied. Be gallant. Volunteer. Particularly where your own clothes, specifically the ones you don't want shrunken to, let's see, maybe your significant other's size, are involved. Be very suspicious of spousal clothing of bright color. Women's clothing is colored with incredibly fugitive dye. Of course, some people are quite open minded about pink underwear and dress shirts that used to be white. Me, not so much. Why in heaven's name gender would have anything to do with a predisposition to setting the washer to abusive temperatures or why an industry that caters to women would discriminate against its best customers with inferior materials is totally beyond me. Sometimes frightening experience trumps logic. Just sayin.
  16. Hmmm. I guess I'll bet on the collected wisdom of the Amazon reviews. It's only $81 shipped, so how far wrong can I go? The people in the reviews seem pretty rational. I'll follow the advice of the guy who says to buy reasonable lags so they don't twist off (oh, how I hate that!) and see what happens. There's nothing to say I couldn't modify the nthing a wee bit if I need to either. Thanks guys!
  17. Dreadful. Unthinkable. It sounds like your Prime Minister is being sensible about it. If you let scum who perpetrate stuff like this turn your country into a police state, they've won.
  18. And therein lies the rub. How do you tell before the thing is lagged to the wall? The center of the stud bay is about 4" from where the center of the panel needs to be. I should be able to offset it that much, yes? I would hope when they says the mounting plate is 24" for 24" centers, they mean the centers of the last set of holes are 24" apart, not that the whole piece of metal is 24" overall. No engineer would be that dumb, right? (Somehow a chill runs up my spine when I look at that last sentence.)
  19. Does anyone within the sound of my voice have experience with wall mounts for plasma flat panels? There seems to be an incredible spread of prices for these things, literally from under $70 to over $700 for specs that would seem to meet my requirements. I need to mount my 50" Panny GT-25 about 10" to a foot out from the wall in The Home Theater of the Absurd. The panel weighs about 85 pounds, according the the manual. This particular wall has studs on 24" centers. The panel will face straight out from the wall and will never move once mounted. I may swing it a little to reach a cable or something, but it's not a situation where the TV will be swiveled back and forth to be viewed from different rooms. I see on Amazon several variations of this generic unit, for paltry prices. http://www.amazon.com/Swivel-TV-Mount-Plasma-LCD-Black/dp/B002CTP6JM It appears to be sold as the "Armor Mount" brand and by a bunch of no-brand-name vendors. A Chief or a Peerless of the same stated capacity would run $500 to $800. (The Chief is actually way higher spec: it will extend 23" from the wall, which is twice the distance and - I think - four times the torsional load that I need. Are the big bucks worth it, or are you buying functionality that I won't really need? I'd cheerfully pay $200 to $300 if I knew I was getting some useful value compared the the $62 generic. $800 seems completely nuts. Oddly, the Amazon reviews of the cheapies are much more enthusiastic than the reviews for the higher, but still moderately priced units.
  20. Too much to suggest too soon I know. But down the road you could branch out to selling complementary manufacturers' stuff, a la Drew at Moon Audio. I agree with Steve. You're selling craftsmanship, which speaks for itself. Can you trademark "Thunderpants"?, I wonder.
  21. It is possible that they have dropped that aspect of the service, but there's nothing that I've googled up that suggests that. There are lots of references to the P2P component of the service, press releases, technical papers, forum discussion (on their own forums, even)and a fair bit of discussion amongst admins on how to block the service, or how to block the outbound portions in any case. (Short answer seems to be that it's not too easy; Spotify uses a big range of ports.) The P2P technology appears to have been part of the founding brief of the company. Remember, it was designed to appeal to people who were trading files illegally. So what better than to use torrents? There is a lot of chatter about why the heck there are no controls for P2P in the client software. If you look in your terms of service, you've given them permission to use your machine to distribute their service. It's there, but it's in the bottom half of a clause that starts out about something else, way down near the bottom of the document. The way it's supposed to work is that you always get the first chunk of a file straight from Spotify. Then you may get subsequent pieces from other users who have that file in their Spotify cache, thus reducing the load on Spotify's machines. It's not supposed to be able to see your local files, just what's in your Spotify cache. Apparently, you may be able to block P2P activity on your own machine by using your firewall software to throtte down outbound traffic to Spotify's IPs to some amount low enough to cause the service to revert to pure streaming. Admittedly, I get more skeptical than usual about anything that's been hyped to the heavens and back. But I really would be more comfortable if the company appeared to be a little more forthcoming. (Sounding "hip" doesn't do it) And it's 2011. Americans are not comfortable with malware and their computers having conversations behind their backs. It's not about beating the man anymore. It's about delivering music and in a competitive environment nowadays at that. My wood burning smartphone won't support either Spotify's or MOG's client, so I have no idea if there's a P2P component on the mobile service. I doubt that such a thing would work. But I just haven't looked into it.
  22. I just downloaded the client. I am reminded of how much I dislike iTunes. I guess that means they've done well It's too soon to tell if they have as much material, or more or less than MOG. The "star" functionality for favorites or "your collection" might or might not cut it. Props for it being quick. But will it work easily when you've saved a few hundred albums? The business about streaming rate is troubling, both because of quality and because their responses to the fellow who complained strike me as devious and deceptive. If I liked devious and deceptive, I'd still be an eMusic customer. I don't get why not - particularly for the US market - just ditch the P2P nonsense and serve the darned streams. Apparently, a paltry five bucks a month is enough to cover it. 30 days free trial, then pay up. That would be more than fair.
  23. Maybe they took my advice for the US market before I gave it
  24. Spotify invites are alleged to be here (courtesy of Lefstez, who is hyper-shilling for them): http://www.spotify.com/us/lefsetz/ I don't have the link to the relevant support thread handy, but the fly in the ointment seems to be that it requires a P2P connection (bit torrent, I assume). That won't fly through work firewalls - or mine for that matter- and will pose a problem for folks whose ISPs limit cumulative bandwidth or frown on too much up-bound traffic. People who are stealing music don't mind some network issues. But on behalf of those of us who pay for the service, I'd advise they ditch that noise and just serve their streams from their own servers. I'll give it a try, but I'm not sure it will unseat MOG at my house. How does the Squeezebox support work? Is it an option for those of us with Linux-based music servers? BTW, I noticed that MOG is alleged to be soon releasing a Squeezebox plugin.
