  1. Good, perhaps our housing market will get under control so I don't have to pay as much in property taxes.
  2. My niece really loves her new Chromebook. It also looks really nice (like a real laptop).
  3. Happy 2015
  4. Happy Birthday Jacob!
  5. Happy Birthday Ken!
  6. Merry Christmas to all of HC. Appreciate every second you have with your loved ones.
  7. Happy Birthday Ric!
  8. Peter said it best. Life is precious.
  9. So sorry to hear about Larry and his daughter.
  10. At some point, I used MacPorts to install Xournal but that was years ago. I wonder if I still have it on my machine in the office. I haven't used homebrew. I shall investigate both.
  11. You made it yourself? Cool!
  12. Sorry Haj and Brent.
  13. I don't know about XQuartz and Yosemite but I can let you know if I I try it. I will mostly just be using X11/xterm and Inkscape though. Jim: I have XQuartz on my other computers, that I downloaded a while ago. I just wanted to confirm that macosforge doesn't allow malicious activity on its site like sourceforge (and other download sites). It's probably fine. As for sourceforge, it seems they sometimes bundle honest software with adware/bloatware using their installer (perhaps this is for Windows only though). They also allow malicious ads.
  14. Does anyone know anything about macosforge.org? Who maintains it? Is it safe from malware/crapware? The reason I ask is because of all the malware and crapware bundled with other software appearing on sourceforge (which I won't use anymore). I am hoping (guessing) that macosforge.org is completely separate from sourceforge and just has a similar name. (I would like to download xquartz from it.) Edit: Oh wait, I think I remember something about Apple hosting it which answers my question.
  15. Just checked and there is still no FiOS service here. What are you using to test your speed Todd? The last time I went to speedtest.net, it redirected me to a page to download MacKeeper (I guess I must have accidentally clicked in the wrong spot and must not have had adblock running) so I'd prefer not to use that site anymore.
  16. I don't have much on the computer right now, OS X plus Chrome. So if I'm going to unencrypt, now is the time to do it.
  17. That is a good point. Any risk of shit getting messed up when in turning off firevault?
  18. I was under the impression that Firevault II was a lot better than FV and there wasn't difference with performance. Since I won't be traveling with this computer, perhaps I should turn off FV and just make an an encrypted sparse disk for the most sensitive data.
  19. How much more real life performance do you get with an unencrypted drive?
  20. Yesterday I installed Little Snitch and it was causing some problems on my new imac. I stupidly decided just to do a clean (erase &) install of OS X instead of just leaving it alone. Then, I was getting the problems that I had with my previous imac (spinning beach balls which changing sound output, the setup assistant messed up, etc.) so I did another erase and install. I think everything is ok now. Each time I have encrypted the drive. So basically, the SSD has been erased twice and had the OS X installed on it 3 times (encrypted 3 times) since I got it. My question is whether doing this is going to wear out the SSD prematurely. Also, is it better in the future (if I must) to install over the current OS X or do an erase and install. I am guessing that I am being paranoid but the SSD is not easy to change in an imac.
  21. I probably shouldn't even ask but wouldn't it be easier for her to take a flight home?
  22. You better find your way in Houston during this trip!
  23. Cool!
