No, I thought it would be a good opportunity to get a bunch of crap off my computer so I just went with the clean reinstall.

Very good question. Seemed to happen after I messed around with macports. % sudo port -f uninstall installed

Did a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard on my MPB (after I somehow screwed things up enough to keep X11 from working).
