You do have Welker and Foster left though...

Damn Seattle D/ST! It also hurts to have Cam on the bench this week, ouch.

^Yes.

That looks great but, you're right, no 25lb backpack is going to be fun to carry.

Glad you made it there without too many problems. How did the Brain work out?

Got the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8yesterday. Loving it so far. I haven't done any tests but it seems to focus ok. I'll have to look at the typical problems that the Sigma's have so I can check that this one is a good copy. It is pretty large already (especially since I've been mostly using the Nikon 35mm DX lately). Glad I didn't get the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 now, since it would have seemed huge. Crappy cell phone pic: -
Very cool Vicki!

My mom used to use my dad's pc and has been very happy with a Mac. It wasn't very a very difficult transition.

Besides ripping CDs on my Macbook Pro, I pretty much* never use a CD/DVD drive. The App store is very convenient for people like your mom. *Except possibly making a bootable Linux disk which I am sure your mom will not do.

By the way, I have been interested in getting a prepaid card to use on the internet. Where is the best place to get one? Can you get one that you add money to periodically? Edit: Nevermind, the American Express Prepaid card looks pretty good.

I am thinking of getting an iphone 5. My Google Nexus S (1.5 years old) is getting rather slow and it is beginning to annoy me. I haven't had an iphone and I am worried since there is no Swype. I do like the fact that it is smaller than my Nexus S which will be better for me since I have very small hands and cannot use my phone with one hand right now. I am worried about a couple of things: 1) Battery life - what kind of battery life does this get? The battery is fairly small compared to other android phones. 2) Apple maps - how are they? I haven't upgraded to OS6 on my ipad. 3) It doesn't have Swype which I use all the time for fast typing. Anyone switched from Swype on an android phone to an iphone and regretted it? Anything else to keep me from doing it? Is it worth it to get 32GB over 16GB? I don't think I will keep much music/pictures on it.

No, the Air is great. Edit: Maybe you meant whether you should get her any kind of computer at all, or maybe an ipad. Not sure the question but my mom doesn't know much about computers and has an ok time on my old Macbook Pro. She basically doesn't use much besides a web browser though. I recently taught her how to put pictures on it. Hopefully she hasn't forgotten.

You can now get a NuWave for $795 without a trade-in. I'm still tempted.

Interesting concept. I wonder how well it would work in practice. A new photography backpack by MindShift Gear, Think Tank's new outdoor photography gear store. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/134466492/rotation180-photo-backpack

Wanted to start biking (mountain bike and spinning) a bit since my shoulder has improved. However, I can't find my biking shoes and think I left them at the gym a couple of months ago. Sucks since I liked those ones.

I tend to stay out of sandstorms if I can help it. I didn't think about the polarizing filter at the beach. I would probably be using one there. -

Thanks for the link Crappy. @Peter: Do you think it is useful to have a filter in a really dusty or windy environment or around little kids or should I just send back the UV filter altogether? Edit: I guess you do a fair amount of shooting at the beach and don't use filters so maybe I have answered my own question. -

That seems to be the consensus. However, I was mainly concerned with noisy AF and hunting on the Tamron. Also, I thought the VR on the Sigma might be useful. The difference in picture quality didn't sound all that much. If I am not happy with the Sigma, I will probably return it and try out the Tamron non-VC. By the way, since people seem to have problems with Sigma lenses, I would like to do some tests when I get it so I can return it if it's not functioning properly. Is there a good site that explains what and how to test a lens (for AF, etc.) when you get it? -
Oops, that is what I meant. I just tried it again and it worked fine (didn't redirect to url4short.info) but went to head-case. Has anyone else run into this?
-
I don't know if this is a problem with google search, the new forum software or something else. Recently, I have had some problem when I search head-case from google (using site:head-case.org) and then click on a link. I don't know how often this has happened (maybe in the past couple of days?). It takes me to something like http://url4short.info/a00e9662. Then I can't get anywhere from that. It happened on both my computer and the ipad so I don't think it is something on my end (hope not!). I looked around a bit and this has happened on some other forums. One place said it was due to Tapatalk being activated? Thought it may be due to the upgrade. For now, I'll just search directly in HC.

Indeed, I did. I think I will go ahead and get a filter. I figure that it can't mess up my pictures too much and it is better safe than sorry.
