  1. I haven't mentioned it before now, because it's been a bit of a scramble, but today I signed a lease on a new apartment. I'm going to miss my current place, but my landlord's Father is getting too old to care for himself completely, and he's going to move into my apartment, so that he can still have some sense of self reliance. But Sheri can better help him out. My new apartment is 20 minutes West/Northwest, in a sleepy town called Nicasio. I use the term town loosely. I'm in the middle of giant Redwood trees. And I do mean in the middle. It's absolutely gorgeous! Maki will have 5 big dogs as neighbors. The landlords are dog softies and have foster failed with each one. Though Maki will have her own fenced yard. And this apartment has a doggy door, which is phenomenal. It's a bit smaller than my current place, but does have a sizable deck overlooking the forest of giant Redwoods, and much more kitchen cabinet space for my abundant kitchen appliance collection. Maki can bark all she wants, and I can crank the music as loud as I want. Currently my apartment is below a house, and that keeps it quite a bit cooler than the house above me. This new place is below a garage with a concrete slab floor, and the trees block out a lot of direct sunlight. So it should be even cooler than this place. It was quite comfortable at 4:00 today. I've had the heater vent blocked since the day I moved in almost 7 years ago. And will never need the heater in the new place. Still have my Alaska blood. Should be in on the first. Will take some pics after getting situated. Nate, do you remember the hike we went on last time you were out here? It's just a little further up the road from there, and very similar surroundings. The only downside is no in-house washer/dryer, but that's not the end of the world. It has two large closets with hanging rods, where my current apartment has none. And as a gay man, I do have an adequate clothing collection. I threw out about 20 pair of old shoes today. So only about 80-90 pair to have to move. Norm Abram would covet my plaid collection. Haven't counted but at least 40-50 plaid shirts alone. 50-60 hats, etc... You know, a perfectly reasonable wardrobe. I did slim my T-shirt collection considerably today, and have about 50 to take to Goodwill/Salvation Army. My 50-60 pair of boxer briefs and 100-120 pair of socks will remain intact. I get nervous with less. I will most likely be thinning my crazy audio cable/adapter collection soon. Will post to give anyone an opportunity to claim any unwanted items. Only 20 minutes from Compound Bedecarre, so Al, Claire and Dorothy won't easily be rid of me.

  2. The drinking game is called "Hi Bob" because the number of times it was said per episode essentially became it's own joke. RIP to one of the true greats. I think I will listen to The Buttoned Down Mind of Bob Newhart because it's been a very long time.

  5. Yes to what Doug said. If you have a digital library then Roon is very useful. So the Nucleus One acts as my server, you tell it where your digital files are and it aggregates those into a library for you. You also tell it what services you have, which includes Tidal and Qobuz here in the States, and also makes those libraries available to you in Roon. You can use any Windows, Mac or Linux computer as you server as well as several different NAS systems. When you are listening you can also call up Lyrics, songwriting and performing details, etc. and you can then branch out from a particular song to listen to other similar style music within your library or services. So what you listen on can be any zone within your area. So my current zones include the Oppo and then my KEF LSX speakers. The reason they are set up separately is that the Oppo also connects to my Headphone amps. I control the Nucleus One output from one of my computers which also are running Roon or from my iPad which runs an iPad version of Roon Remote. I could also run Roon remote from my phone but I am old and benefit from a bigger screen and keyboard. There is also another program, Roon Arc that allows me to access my Roon server (the nucleus one) from outside my local network. So I have been able to access my Roon library from my iPad at work, airplaying to my office speakers as well as listening in my car while tooling around VT on my phone using Roon Arc on Carplay. Roon Arc is still a bit primitive as it is only available as a mobile IOS or android app. They do not even have a separate iPad OS version. So if you have a digital library, Roon works well and allows you to access your digital library easily from anyplace on your local network as well as from off network as long as you have a network connection. I am in no way an IT guru so I consider it a pretty good testament to its effectiveness. Most streamers are Roon capable at least and you can use a Ropiee appliance or any number of commercial products such as the Pecan Pi’s to make any DAC Roon capable. Anything you have connected to a computer you are using to run Roon automatically becomes a Roon endpoint.

  6. The Song Remains the Same by Led Zeppelin (1976) https://album.link/i/1400470544 https://open.qobuz.com/album/d3k9q3m2ttfxc Example: Might as well give the real clip. I listen to a lot of Zep, as we all should. But I realized the other day that I had not listened to the live album in a long time. Shame on me, I know. I have a clear conscious now. And I am a better person for it.

  11. Yes. Roon acts as a library aggregator. So it will combine everything you have stored locally with everything on the services you subscribe to. You don't have to worry about what is where, you just play it. The system will figure out where to get the file.

  14. @Voltron for roon, you need a server and a streamer. The nucleus one is a server (it's just a small computer in a fancy box). It can also work as a streamer so long as you have a dac that can take it's output (USB or HDMI). You can then also add additional streamers for other systems. For an existing DAC that is coax/toslink only, you'd need some sort of USB to spdif converter, or a stand alone streamer.

  20. I fully admit to being mostly out of it on the state of streaming and Roon especially, but I'm confused by your decision to get the Nucleus One and the miniDSP SHD, because the description of the latter makes it sound duplicative. In that setup does the Nucleus One run Roon software and manage your files and then the miniDSP SHD is your dac and preamp? Without the Nucleus One, would you need a computer even if you have the miniDSP and network drives? If I already have a dac and preamp, can I just get the Nucleus One and a drive to run Roon and play files, along with Tidal, Qobuz or Spotify through it and into the existing system that is not Roon ready? I guess my question boils down to that--does the output from the Nucleus One still require a Roon ready dac/streamer/preamp?

  21. Back in '83 I was building a mall in Juneau, Alaska. Some of the Pages working at the State Capitol threw some incredible parties. One page by the name of Jay King threw a Bob party. They put on reruns of The Bob Newhart Show, and everytime someone on the show said Bob, you had to drink. It was a very fun party. Later that night Jay King performed many Michael Jackson songs, and did them well. You probably wouldn't know him by name, but 3 years later Jay King became the front man of Club Nouveau. They had a huge hit with a remake of Lean On Me. R.I.P. Bob.

  25. My first "serious" test for the next cycle here in Gran Canaria. It is practically the same route as the race. Thought and mood are something very curious... while I was climbing, although I was having fun with the beautiful day (we reached almost 40º C) I had the sensation of going slower than usual and when I returned home I was quite tired. I thought it was the treatment's fault but nevertheless, when I saw the data this afternoon I saw that not only climb faster but I also set significantly better times. Sea of clouds in the north of the island In Tejeda it´s the Parador (something like a Hotel) Top climb Jose needed breakfast today....

  27. I don't think this year I´l achieve the good result of last year but I am working very hard for this: This year the 10th edition is celebrated and a much tougher journey is expected, Despite not being at my best physically, I am happy to return and share this special day with my friends and colleagues from other teams. During this time I have received many calls and messages of support and encouragement. No drama, I'm glad to be back

  28. so i have a big problem with the morons that charge stupid money to add a tube buffer to a solid state output stage. modwright instruments, and lampizator for example. you start with something that has a 200 ohm output impedance, and by the time you are done with the cathode follower, its a 1.5 k output impedance, or in the case of the lampizator something like a 3k or more output impedance. its stupid and counterproductive. but hey there are these glowing things sticking out the top. you can't make a decent i/v converter with tubes without 6 triodes per channel. and even then, solid state is far better. r2r is a voltage output anyway, not a current output

  31. The fact that Apple is still selling machines with 8GB of memory (that can't be upgraded) in 2024 is as insane as it is irritating. I took my eyes off my mum's 84 year old friend for two days (after telling her to get an Air with 24GB) and she shows up with an 8GB model. There's a guy on the MV stuff for sale hawking a new in box M1 Air ...with 8GB. I refuse to have anything to do with a Mac that has less RAM than the GPU in my Wintendo.
