  1. We're metric down here, so my first arbitrary milestone was 10 kg (22 lbs) off, which came up yesterday. In addition to eliminating wheat (specifically) and gluten (generally), I've also started limiting liquid calories -- which in my case means cutting back on alcohol since I basically just drink water, tea and wine. This has also been a net positive for ... other reasons. Anyway, I'm now 102 kg (225 lbs) @ 6'7" for a 25.3 BMI. I'd like to get to around 210 lbs (95 kg) and am just going to keep doing what I'm doing until it stops working.

  2. Before we went full colonial, I used to get my shoes from these guys. In those days it was $25 flat rate shipping to the US, regardless of the # of pairs. Don't know if that still holds. http://www.shiptonandheneage.co.uk Don't wear the oxfords etc. much anymore but expect they'll all outlast me.

  5. "Steaks Sandwich" The local pit beef bbq place has a steak sandwich special on weds, for $6.50. It's a ribeye sandwich. The concept seems good enough, so one day we tried it. Turns out it's not just a ribeye sandwich, it's 2-3 ribeyes on a burger bun. We've changed the name to steaks sandwich, and go there every Wednesday.

  9. Work in Quincy, WA with a cool coworker of mine, then we went wine tasting at Cave B and had dinner there on the way back. I think we both agreed that the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon were the best (both of us got a bottle of the 2009 Petit Verdot as well), and the pork belly and tiger shrimp over grits didn't suck.

  10. I thought about getting a BGE or Traeger for a long time. However, I wanted something I could put away in the garage when I wasn't using it (and Tim wanted something cheaper) so I ended up going with a Weber Smokey Mountain (18") which is $300, for smoking. For grilling, we have the small "Old Smokey" ($29) which is cheap but works great (they are made by a company here in Houston). The medium isn't that much more and would probably be better for a family. The small one is perfect for the two of us. Charcoal is much more work that a pellet or gas grill, but I like it.
